Organizational Structure and Contacts
Michigan State University Extension underwent a reorganization process in July 2010 that moved us to operating as a
matrix organization. A matrix organization is the type of organizational structure that is built around two or more
dimensions, such as functions, products or regions, and in which people may have two bosses. (Galbraith, 2009). The
MSUE matrix is currently structured in the following manner:

Thirteen districts across the state with a District Coordinator assigned to each district. Following is a list of the counties

INSTITUTE WORK TEAMS
Within each Institute, there are work teams made up of Extension educators, specialists, campus staff and in some
cases, program instructors and program associates. Individuals are assigned to work teams based on their role or area
of expertise. Each work team has co-chairs who work with team members to operationalize their program plans defined
within logic models which are developed collaboratively with work team members.

more work teams, may participate in staff related activities and/or interact with stakeholders in your district and receive
a performance appraisal by your Institute Director (with input from your District coordinator).

MSUE Organizational Development Team
The purpose of our Organizational Development team is to enhance the long-term health, well-being and performance
of MSU Extension while enriching the lives of employees.
Organizational Development programs value diversity, scholarship, and a systems approach to organizational
development. The objective of our team is to improve the organization’s capacity to handle its internal and external
operations and relationships. The Organizational Development team aims to be a catalyst that helps MSUE get from
where it is today to our desired future.
