Volunteer Role Description Position: WELLNESS AMBASSADOR Program and Position Summary: The Wellness Ambassador Program supports the three mission priorities of the Heart & Stroke Foundation: prevent disease, save lives and promote recovery. Reducing the risk for heart disease and stroke is central to all three of these mission components and in achieving healthy lives free of heart disease and stroke. The Wellness Ambassador Volunteer will be trained to speak knowledgeably on risk reduction and disease prevention by providing evidence-based information to the public. The Ambassador will be the voice and face of our message that “up to 80% of heart disease and stroke is preventable” and that we can make health last together. The role involves public engagement through the 1.800 InfoLine and community events. The volunteer can be involved in one or both of these components. Applicants: Individuals who enjoy working with people Individuals who are passionate about health promotion and disease prevention/management Individuals willing to learn relevant material and enjoy problem solving Persons who may be drawn to this position: current or retired health care professionals, educators, or rehabilitation therapists; or students in the health sciences Commitment: Attend a comprehensive training As an InfoLine Volunteer: Commit to minimum one (1) 3-hour shift per week As a Community Events Volunteer: Attend at least one (1) public event every 2 months Participation in the Wellness Ambassador Program for 2 years Responsibilities: Answer questions from members of the public on disease prevention and health promotion Process health information requests Employ and develop an evidence-based resource kit Perform evaluations and provide feedback Communicate and work with the Heart & Stroke Mission Team Skills/Attributes: Experienced and comfortable working with people over the phone and/or in person Willingness to learn and personally engage in health promoting habits Good organization skills and ability to multi-task Strong and effective communication skills Ability to problem solve and willing to find answers to unique questions As an InfoLine Volunteer: - Knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office; - Basic computer research skills or willingness to learn As a Community Events Volunteer: o Ability to prepare for and attend various and diverse community based events o Access to a vehicle an asset Benefits to Volunteer: Dynamic and meaningful way to assist the Heart and Stroke Foundation in meeting our vision of Healthy Lives Free of Heart Disease and Stroke.
