Vital Connections - Engineering What are the general characteristics of an engineer? What do engineers do? What types of engineering are there? What courses do engineering students take? Dr. Tim Vierheller The University of Akron Wayne College Engineers Engineers must be creative; and need good problem solving skills. They must have a good understanding of science, mathematics, and computers. Engineers need a good knowledge of current technology. They also need good communication skills, because almost all engineering projects are done by teams. Engineers need an understanding of business practices, management skills and finance. Design Engineering Analyze Construct Prototypes Test Manufacture Engineering Technology Civil Engineering Civil Engineers plan, design, build, and operate the infrastructure of modern society. This includes highways, bridges, large buildings, power plants, industrial facilities, tunnels, seaports, airports, offshore structures and almost anything else needed as the basis of modern life. http://civil.uakron.edu/bs_degree.html Electrical Engineering The branches of electrical engineering include: research, development, design, manufacture and operation of electrical and electronic projects, services, and systems for instrumentation, automation, communication, power generation and distribution and computation. The growth of electronics has been accelerated by the space age and the emergence of the high speed digital computer. http://civil.uakron.edu/bs_degree.html Mechanical Engineering Developing new products, from biomedical products to engines Improving existing products, perhaps saving energy or costs in the process Discover new science, from mathematical techniques to materials Chemical Engineering Commonly pictured as working in Chemical Process industries. Generally, these jobs involve working with chemicals to make other chemicals, plastics and polymers, paper, soap, and many other materials. Also involved in advanced materials. Usually in this field, Chemical Engineers work to develop better materials for a variety of uses, such as metals and plastics better for airplanes, different types of glass, or even making better chemicals for developing pictures.
