Dear Colleagues, News flashes Department of Industrial Psychology and People Management February 2012 183September 2013 Our Spring Mini-Strategic Indaba on Monday provided an excellent overview of what we are busy with and have achieved over the past six months. The overarching theme was: LET US GO AND MAKE A LASTING DIFFERENCE THROUGH THE STUDENTS WE GROW, DEVELOP AND EQUIP! That will require leadership at all levels and areas in IPPM. Thank you for the tremendous effort and dedication that have gone into making these outcomes possible. The things ahead are just as exciting. Thank you also to our leaders for your presentations. Wow what a team!! All the presentations/documents have been put on our SharePoint. The SABPP – under the visionary leadership of Marius Meyer as CEO who was a member of IPPM - launched South Africa’s first national HR Standards on 20-21 August 2013 at the Silverstar Casino. Approximately 500 HR managers, directors and professionals approved the 13 HR standards as follows: Strategic HRM; Talent management; HR Risk Management; Workforce planning; Learning & Development; Performance management; Reward; Wellness; Employment Relations Management; Organisation Development; HR Service Delivery; HR Technology; and HR Measurement. Each standard contain a definition, objectives, implementation strategy and general notes. Various multinational and listed companies presented case studies on the use of the standards within the corporate and public sectors. We are one of four universities who have already adopted these standards into our teaching. Well done to Cookie and the HRM Programme team! As Cookie was quoted in the Pretoria News: “Finally, we can now claim the HR function can be professionalised in a standardised manner.” Mark Bussin have been appointed on to another Presidential Commission and will serve with the previous Chief Justice, the Honourable Judge Sandile Ngcobo on the Presidential Remuneration Review Commission. This will involve reviewing the HR practices, conditions of employment and remuneration systems, methodologies and levels for about 1,4 million civil servants. It should take about 8 months to complete. On another note Mark’s son James turned 1 recently. How time flies! Prof Willem Schurink presented workshops on qualitative research methods to the Department of Psychiatry, University of Pretoria at Weskoppies Hospital on 10 and 17 May 2013. Prof Christa Krüger, Head of Research at the Department writes: "Both the first workshop on ‘Designing and proposing qualitative research’ and the second workshop on ‘Qualitative data analysis’ were excellent in terms of content, and very well presented. The feedback from the staff members, that attended, was overwhelming positive. With all the important information that you covered in the workshops everyone feels well-equipped to engage in qualitative research. And the congruent way in which you conveyed the training inspired us. Many of the problems in the field of Psychiatry call for qualitative research approaches. We therefore really appreciate the valuable contribution that you made to research in our Department! We look forward very much to the planned continued collaboration in individual student projects". 3 February 2013 2012 September News flashes Department of Industrial Psychology and People Management This past weekend my company, Beatroot Productions, participated in a filmmaking project called the 48HourFilmProject for filmmakers to make a movie in 48 hours. It was a gruesome weekend, with no sleep and continuous work. I still haven’t recovered from it. On the upside, we shot an intense drama called “Uncarved” which will be screening at the Rosebank Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau on the following dates and times: Tuesday 24th Sep - 20h00 Thursday 26th Sep - 17h30 Saturday 28th Sept - 17h30 Sunday 29th Sept - 20h00 Tickets are R40 per screening and will be available from next week Monday, 16 September at Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau at Rosebank Mall and on their website: http://www.sterkinekor.com/#/home/ I humbly urge everyone to come as this was my company’s first film and all the support will be appreciated. Not to mention, on the night the audience have to vote for their favourite film that stands a chance of winning a grand prize. Even if mine wasn’t your favourite, let’s vote for “Uncarved”. - Sizwe Deon’s article, “Dimensionality of the 9-item Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES–9),” has now been published with Ammons Scientific. Congratulations Deon! The UJ First Year Top Achievers Ceremony 2013 took place on Friday, 13 September 2013 in the Sanlam Auditorium, Kingsway Campus. In essence, the students received a Certificate from the VC to acknowledge their excellent performance. CONGRATULATIONS to everyone, well done! We hope you enjoyed your time with little Joshua. As can be seen on the photo we are a thriving department with three new babies who arrived this year. Rochelle, Carin and Anita congratulations to you and your families. The Leadership Programme had a most valuable and stimulating Programme Advisory Committee meeting last week. Intense discussions about the Programme’s intent and direction, as well as leadership challenges were had. Well done to Magda and her team. Congratulations to SWC for the success of their Culture Day. Well done and THANK YOU to Grace for her participation. Four colleagues put themselves forward for the 2013 2nd semester round of promotions: To Associated Professors: Magda and Aletta and To Senior Lecturers: Carolina and Cookie. After a really intense, face-to-face Faculty Review Panel attended individually by Prof Daneel, Prof Gert, Prof Jane and myself itwas decided that at this point in time Cookie and Carolina fully meet/exceeds the promotional criteria for promotion and can be put forward to Senex to be considered for promotion. Once Senex approves that they may be considered for promotion, they will appear before a Promotion Panel. This Panel will occur before the end of the year. Congratulations to Carolina and Cookie for being over the first hurdle. We wish you the very best for the next steps. The step up to Associate Professor, as the first entry into the professorial ranks, is really steep. Though Aletta and Magda did not make the cut this time, the Review Panel was fully convinced that our colleagues have what it takes to become Professors but is not quite ready, given the stringent requirements. The Panel believe they would be ready probably within the next 6 to 12 months. Let us give Magda and Aletta our full support as they work towards meeting the criteria. We are with you all the way! We really need more Senior Lecturers and Associate Professors in IPPM. Wilfred has to, himself, forward to be considered for the 2013 VC Distinguished Award for Outstanding Researcher of the Year. We are with you all the way, Wilfred. We know ‘You are the Best!’ 3 February 2012 xxxxx 2013 Our Notice Boards look a bit staid and tired currently. Can we give them a boost and fresh look, please. Food for thought: “A kind word is like a spring day” (Russian proverb) “Our aspirations are our possibilities and opportunities” (Slightly adapted from Robert Browing) Where the heart is willing, it will find a thousand ways. But where it is unwilling, it will find a thousand excuses” (Indonesian Proverb) News flashes Department of Industrial Psychology and People Management Wish you well in gearing up to the end of the 2nd semester and year. “Be the Best”.
