They begin to learn to trust you. As you build a bond with them, they feel secure in their world. This sets the stage for their entire developmental future. You help them develop socially and emotionally. Social development is our interaction with others. It is the ability to form secure relationships. Emotional development is regulating and expressing emotions. It involves the way one feels about themselves, others and the world. A person’s life experiences, genetic make-up, and temperament can affect their social-emotional development. As your child's first role model, you can send a positive message to them. Start by being supportive. •Love your child and show your affection for them. Hug, cuddle, read, and talk with them throughout the day. •Encourage your child to try new things. Help them see what they are capable of. Let your child know you are pleased with their accomplishments. •Give your child opportunities to play with other children their age. Help them explore their world and get to know the people in it. Model kind and generous behaviors when interacting with other adults and children. •Show your feelings. Let your child see when you are happy or sad. This helps them to develop empathy for others. •Establish daily routines. Your child will feel confident and secure. They will learn that events can happen in an organized way. Create routines that are predictable but flexible. •Acknowledge your child’s feelings. Help them talk about what they feel and how they are feeling. Comfort your child when they are upset. Hold them and speak softly and calmly. Provide positive social-emotional opportunities for your child. They will feel good about themselves and develop confidence. Your child will form secure relationships with others and ultimately will be able to focus and learn. This strong and healthy foundation will lead to future academic success. We stared our Fall unit and went to the pumpkin patch at City Park. We carved and decorated a class pumpkin and picked one out to take home. We are hoping to have a blast playing games and winning prizes at the Fall Fest. In November, we will continue to learn about fall and the exciting changes that come with the season. K- Kindergarten students can now count and write their numbers from 1-10. We will be moving on to adding and subtracting in the next few weeks. They have enjoyed reading stories about pumpkins as they prepared for their field trip to the pumpkin patch on October 23rd. We are still working on mastering identifying our letters and our letter sounds. We can now read our color words and number words. We should practice reading our sigh words DAILY!!!!!!!! As the weather gets cooler, please remember to label all jackets and coats with the student's name. Please refer to the school's uniform policy on proper outer wear. 1st- We are happy to announce that there were many first graders that received certificates for the 1st-9 weeks! Good job boys and girls! Nevertheless, we encourage ALL the students to keep up the good work and to have a positive attitude and behavior at school for the remainder of the school year. We know you can do it! As we approach the holiday season, temperatures will drop. Remember to dress appropriately: long sleeve Boudreaux sweater or a red/white long sleeve under the uniform shirt. 2nd- Happy November already!! The 2nd grade classes are in full instructional mode. Students are reading, writing, and analyzing math problems. They will be working on several projects during November. In Reading, students are working on improving their phonemic awareness and comprehension skills. In social Living, with local elections here, our students will be learning about the three Branches of Government within the United States and the importance of elections and voting. In Science, our students will be learning about food chains. We will be discussing who and what are producers, consumers, and decomposers. Our students will be creating their own food chain/web within a particular ecosystem. So be prepared. Study and practice Math and Reading every night. 3rd- 3rd graders are really enjoying Life Skills. They look forward to learning new skills about being a better friend and making decisions. Ask your child about what they are learning. Please continue to read daily with your children. 20 minutes is the daily recommendation for children their age. Also practice, practice, practice those multiplication facts! PRACTICE makes perfect. The 3rd grade students are growing by leaps and bounds; we are so pleased with the academic and social progress of our students. 4th- After receiving our report cards, 4th graders are well aware of their strengths and weaknesses. For the 2nd nine weeks, we will strive to keep our strengths, and improve upon our weaknesses. We hope to all receive the BUG award for the 2nd Nine Weeks (Bringing Up Grades). In addition, we will soon take our first Interactive Achievement Benchmark test, which will give teachers and students an even clearer picture of where we stand academically. 5th- In Math, students are preparing for the first Interactive Achievement Benchmark test by learning the order of operations and how to add fractions. In Science, students are discussing which form of energy they believe is better through lively debates. In Social Studies, the students are learning about ancient Indians and their cultures, such as the Mayans, Anasazis, Aztecs, and Mound Builders. For ELA, the students are learning how to write a proper five paragraph essay based on a given prompt. In Reading, students are learning about the Pacific Coast Native Americans by reading the novel The Birchbark House, which is about a young Ojibwa girl whose tribe is devastated by Smallpox. Students are working on understanding how characters evolve over time and are affected by dramatic events in a text through reading this novel. 4th/5th Spanish Immersion- A special welcome to Mrs. Rehpelz! She is our English teacher for our class. We are so happy to have her with us, and is a great source to have around. It is going to be an interesting year as we will learn many facts and concepts with her. We have been working hard to keep up with all the new strategies taught in math on how to find the product in multiplying and the quotient in dividing. English is turning out to be more interesting than before. It has been a different year for us, but we are up to the challenge and are looking forward to meeting our goals , starting with the testing we are going to face soon.
