The purpose of the Green Engineering Program Committee
(GEPC) is to promote a holistic, systems approach to improved energy efficiency, sustainability, renewable energy and ‘cradle-tocradle’ design. GEPC serves as the AIAA focal point for all “green” aerospace-related programs and technologies, and works synergistically with the appropriate technical committees to assure that the AIAA membership is adequately informed about all aspects of this critical aerospace activity.

Conference Brochure
Background
• Idea for a specialty conference on HEP originated in discussions between Prof. Riti Singh
(Cranfield U) and Ruben Del Rosario (NASA) following a panel discussion on the future of propulsion at ISABE 2011
• Conference would bring together professionals working on disruptive propulsion technologies, specifically, hybrid electric propulsion (HEP) systems
• Prof. Singh served as general chair. Dr. Del Rosario served as co-chair
• As a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) UK, Prof. Singh was able to persuade IMechE to lend its support and host the conference at its London headquarters
• Through GEPC and EOASys PC, secured AIAA approval for co-sponsorships
• Decided on a two-day conference format with limited number of participants in a single session to facilitate technical interaction and discussion
• Over 20 technical presentations and 5 keynote speakers
• 20 technical papers published in a special issue of the international journal Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology (Vol. 86, No. 6, 2014) devoted to the conference
Participation
• Conference held 17-18 November, 2014 at IMechE Heaquarters, in London, UK
• About 90 participants from various organizations including Cranfield U, Cambridge U, Rolls-
Royce, Airbus, Avio Aero, Bauhaus Luftfahrt, Central Institute for Aviation Motors (Russia),
Delft U, ES Aero, Georgia Tech, and NASA
• Keynote addresses by:
Richard Parker, Director of Research and Technology, Rolls-Royce
Sebastien Remy, SVP Head of Innovations, Airbus Group
James Free, Director, NASA Glenn Research Center
Andrew Rolt, Specialist Aerospace Strategic Research, Rolls-Royce
Askin Isikversen, Head of Visionary Concepts, Bauhaus Lufthfahrt
General Thoughts
• Well-organized conference in excellent IMechE facilities, central London location
• Well balanced mix of technical work from Europe, UK, US in areas of distributed propulsion, multi-fuels combustion, advanced hybrid-electric architectures, integrated hybrid-electric concepts, hybrid-electric aircraft operations
• Extremely positive feedback from all participants
• Conference achieved its goal of bringing like-minded folks together to form an international community in a disruptive technological area
• Very impressive presentations from multiple organizations
• General sense that HEP for aircraft is a relatively new and disruptive technology area, but unlike other new disruptive technologies, a lot of expertise already exists in many key areas that needs to come together in a collaborative manner to solve the specific aviation-related challenges
• Plans for a follow-on conference in two years met with general enthusiasm
Potential opportunity for AIAA to take the lead/organize/host?

We've been investigating a topic at the Aviation Sub-Committee at the ETC that might be more appropriately looked at by the Green Engineering PC. The topic is called Energy Harvesting. It involves putting tethered wind turbines in the Earth's boundary layer to gain more efficiency for energy harvesting from wind energy. I've talked to some people and have some contacts if you're interested. Please contact me by email, phone, or I will be at SciTech and we could meet face to face.
Thanks,
Randy Nelson

Honors & Awards Activities
Green Engineering Award
Established in 2015, the Green Engineering Award is presented for a significant contribution in the broad field of green engineering, specifically as related to the application of engineering sciences and systems engineering to the production, storage, distribution, and conservation of clean and green energy and for advancement of green engineering sciences. This annual award is generally presented by the AIAA Green Engineering Program Committee at the AIAA SciTech Forum . Nomination Deadline: 1 February
Green Design Competition
The design competitions ask students to solve real-world design problems. These respected competitions give World’s best student designers a chance to put their talent front and center for the green engineered aerospace world. Winners receive monetary awards.
Sustained Green Engineering Service Award
The Sustained Green Engineering Service Award is presented to recognize sustained, significant service and contributions to
AIAA Green Engineering endeavors by members of the Institute. The nominee/recipient must be a member in good standing who has shown continuing dedication to the green engineering interests of the Institute by making significant and sustained contributions over a period of time, typically 10 years or more. Active participation and service at the local section/regional level, and/or the national level is a potential discriminator in the evaluation of candidates. A maximum of 20 awards are presented each year. These annual awards are presented at a Forum or activity with which the recipient is most associated or active, or may be presented by the recipient’s local AIAA section at an appropriate section event. A nomination form, score sheet and additional information (no more than one page) that provides details to substantiate the scores for various activities is required.
Letters of endorsement are not required for this award.
Nomination Deadline: 1 July

ACCESS 2 Workshop, 9 Jan 2015, Kissimmee, Florida
NASA, DLR and NRC Canada jointly conducted the Alternative-Fuel Effects on Contrails and Cruise EmiSSions
(ACCESS 2) experiment last May to evaluate the effects of burning a 50:50 blend of biofuel/JetA on the emissions and contrail formation of the NASA DC-8 aircraft as it flew under typical cruise conditions. The experiment collected over 15 hours of unique data that detail fuel impacts on DC-8 gas and particle emissions over a range of thrust and altitude conditions. Extensive contrail measurements were also recorded, which will allow us to examine the links between soot/sulfate emissions and contrail ice concentrations and microphysical properties.
Participating groups are currently analyzing the data and will present results at a public meeting on January 10,
2015, at the conclusion of the AIAA SciTech conference in Kissimmee, Florida. More details to come.
You are cordially invited to attend this meeting and to bring anyone else in your organization who might be interested. A draft agenda is attached. If you have questions or comments, please email or call me at one of the numbers below.
Thanks, and I hope to see you in Kissimmee,
Bruce Anderson, Ph.D.

Suggestion for New Personal Interest Categories
Betty (from AIAA),
We would like to suggest these new Personal Interest categories:
Clean and Sustainable Energy
Environmental Impact of Aviation
These are some of the existing Personal Interest categories of interest related to “green”:
Aeroacoustics
Atmospheric and Space Environments
Environmental Assurance/Compliance
Terrestrial Energy Systems
However, it is our feeling that the two new suggestions are sufficiently different than these current categories, AND that the new suggestions would be very helpful in identifying members interested in green technologies.
Thanks,
Marty
From a suggestion from GEPC Member Noel Bakhtian
