ANSU FORMULA STUDENT? See more in; www.formulastudent.com whAT IS FORMULA STUDENT? Formula Student (FS) is a breeding ground for world class engineers. It challenges university students from around the world to design and build a single-seat racing car, which is then put to the test at the famous Silverstone Circuit at a 4-day event in July. Its key aims are to inspire the next generation and address the skills shortage in engineering. The way FS achieves this is by providing crucial practical experience and transferable skills for SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITY use in a diverse range of industries. Nigeria like we all Know doesn’t have any Automobile University. It all started like a joke, February, 2008, when 10 students gathered and challenged themselves to make a difference in their chosen career which is by then Mechanical Engineering. They formed a ten man team and started with the design of common Mechanical Engineering elements under the supervision of our lecturer (Engr. EGBOKA, Chuma D.) and our then HOD (Engr. Dr. Atanmo P.). The first design they embarked on then was the design of a unique Nut and bolt which gave them the name (The Nuta_Bolts). They went further designing many other components like the key-holder/opener they machine using the conventional lathe machine, they modeled a speed cone of a lathe machine and designed a miniature camera. They were on the plans of designing and producing a multiple Grinding Machine when IMechE came into the school through their foundation leader by then (ONYENANU, Ifeanyichukwu U.). He went converting the team to ANSU YM Chapter Research and Technical team (The Nuta_Bolts). By then he was working as the pioneer Coordinator and appointed Chukwu, Echezona J. and Iloh Arthur to head the team. The teams first primary assignment was to continue on the design and production of the multiple Grinding Machine which they finished the design but couldn’t fabricate the work because of lack of finance, they also worked on the design of an incubator. By then the number of the team members had increased from 10 members to 25 members including members from other Departments in the Campus, they continued with the design and production till the then coordinator of the chapter was then moved to represent Nigeria on Research and projects. By May 29, 2010, the Nigeria Projects and Research Director (Onyenanu, Ifeanyichukwu U.) created the Nigerian Projects and Research team and precisely on June 2, 2010, twenty members of the ANSU technical and Research team (The Nuta_Bolts) was inducted into the Nigeria Research and Projects team, this was on the bases that Nigeria will be represented at the Formula students Competition 2011. They were trained alongside with the other members of the Nigeria projects and research team on CAD software that was the latter part of 2010 at Scientific Equipment Development Institute. The Nuta_Bolts have been working hard to set up the design of a rigid structure for an effective race team. 27 strong willed motivated students making up the team from Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Physics, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, civil and Chemical Engineering organize themselves as a modern company. The team being able to get advices from professors and using the available facilities in the universities as well as available resources. After few months of foundation and organization, the Nuta_Bolts are seriously planning to present themselves for the first time at the Formula Students event in Silverstone Circuit UK this FS2011 edition, as a competitor for teams in class 2 series. “It is a tough one Nigeria making it there but lets see what God will do” says the team leader “ that we take into consideration that we set the pace and others follow here in Nigeria which is our main objective for this season and coming year is to improve and gain more experience”. Knowing fully well that they are highly inexperienced in the field of Engineering, the team has enlisted the help of professionals to supervise and guide them through, to actualize their objective. By that Nigeria would have proven to have the skill and manpower to join the league of developed nation, as most of the machine parts would have be developed and fabricated at home. With proven designs comes the fabricating plants, which will not only provide the much needed employment for the teeming youths of the country, but will also add to her Gross Domestic Product (GDP). If one goes back to the history of technology (Automobile Industry to be precise), Mercedes Benz company started with one demand, and grew to the complex plant we know today, followed with numerous auxiliary plants that produce the parts. It will take a giant step like to awaken the greatness in Nigerian Engineer, to reshape the economy of this nation, moving it from Machine import based to that of export. The team is facing a lot of challenges for them to be there at Silverstone circuit, UK. If successful, the participation of a Nigerian team at the formula student competition will have a great impact on the country, in the area of her technology, economy, and education. As we have earlier stated, in the competition, challenge of the teams are to design and fabricate a prototype car that will best meet the team’s production target. Literally saying, the Nigerian team with the help of Nigerian supervisors will design and build the car in question. What more can be said about the Nigeria’s level of technology if her In the area of academics, by the mere interest of the Nigerian team in the Formula student, a relationship was established between the team and that of Egypt (the only African Team to have competed in the formula student that was last year’s editionHELWAN University FS team). A meaningful participation of the Nigerian team will open areas of collaboration between the colleges of engineering here and their counterparts abroad (with over 100 universities competing in this years event) for the exchange of resources. Most importantly, participation will attract funds from multinationals and philanthropists to the colleges for further nurturing of engineering talents there, which will ease the huge burden government bears to run the tertiary institutions in the country. INSIGHT: The technique of the NUTA_BOLTS The team divided themselves into seven different Team important groups headed by sub-group leaders under the supervision of our prestigious supervisors. The groups included; The drafting/Modeling (Dimension) Chassis/Suspension System Ergonomics/Electronics Power Train Dimensions Aerodynamics Drive Trains The Drafting/ Modeling Group Comprising of UBAKA Chukwudi M., ONYENANU Ifeanyichukwu U. and Victor CHIZEA are working with the whole supervisors. They are into the full modeling and simulation (ranging from dynamic simulation to finite Element analysis of the race car). Chassis/Suspension System Group Headed by OGAMBA Francis C. as their group leader and OTUU Obinna Otuu (Engr.) as their supervisor are solely into the full design of the suspension and Chassis. Their main aim is to design a unique chassis which will have its strength increased and weight decreased to about (34-40) Kilogram using the finite element analysis. This will go a long way in getting a well finished job. This improvement depends mainly on our new overall concept; the mounting and removal of the engine will not needs a separable frame, as this can be achieved through the cockpit area. The grid tube frame will consists of one piece which will helped significantly increasing its strength. Ergonomics/Electronics Group ATUSIUBA Onyinye K. working with his group under the supervision of OLADEJI Bolarinwa (Engr.) working to introduce some electrical features to make the car very easy to drive. Power Train group The four-cylinder four-stroke inline engine provides the Formula-Student-Car with the best power to weight ratio. Further-more, the engine and its integrated sequential six-speed-gearbox constitute an extremely compact system of engine and gearbox. The default oil system is replaced by a dry sump lubrication which reduces the engine height by ten centimeters resulting in a lower centre of gravity. This group lead by OZICUHUKWU Callistus under the supervision of Dr. NKWORKA Chuks (Engr.) and Engr. EGBOKA Chuma D. will improve the intake system as well: Instead of using the normal throttle, they are to designed a special barrel throttle that allows the reduction of air resistance. The entire intake system including the air box is made out of lightweight carbon fibre. Dimensions Group They are set to work directly with the drafting group to facilitate the speed of the modeling being lead by KALU Matthew under the supervision of Dr. NKWORKA Chuks (Engr.) and UKWU Nwachukwu Aerodynamics Group This is to be determined by ANABA Ikechukwu and group members under the supervision of Dr. ATANMO Philip Drive Trains Group The power is transmitted to the differential via a chain wheel. The compact lamellar limited slip differential will be made of aluminium and weight less than three kilogram. The torque is then transmitted via the right and left constant universal joint to the wheels. A lighter version of the tripod knuckle would be used; it is connected to the hub of the rear wheel. As determine by OKEKE Ifeanyi J. under the supervision of Dr. NWIGBO Solomon and Dr. Sam CHUKWUJEKWU The Nuta_Bolts Team While ostensibly about the design and production of a single seater racing car, Formula Students is actually more about building future Engineering talents, not just in design and manufacturing but in many of the management, marketing and people skills so vital in the modern world across all sectors of employment. This brochure primarily addresses the process technique of the Nuta_Bolts. But it also included the organizational and model structure of the team and its racing car model.
