VETiS Moderation meetings – November 2012
Objectives of the meeting
•Understand the purpose of validation and moderation
•Why we need to moderate materials
•Understand AIET requirements
•Analyse student feedback
•Provide your own feedback to AIET
•Understand requirements for 2013
VETiS Moderation meetings – November 2012
Purpose of validation...
...is to ensure that assessments meet the principals of
assessment and rules of evidence
VETiS Moderation meetings – November 2012
Principals of assessment:
Valid
The assessment meets the requirements of the training package
Reliable
The Assessment Tasks achieve consistent results
Flexible
Assessment Tasks should meet the individual needs and requirements of
students while maintaining validity and reliability
Fair
Assessments are unbiased, reasonable and clear, provide feedback to
students, and are designed to meet individual needs.
VETiS Moderation meetings – November 2012
Rules of Evidence:
Valid
The assessment meets the requirements of the training package
Sufficient
There is enough evidence available to say that the student is competent
Current
The evidence shows that the student is currently competent
Authentic
Is the evidence provided the students’ own work?
VETiS Moderation meetings – November 2012
Moderation
This checks consistency and reliability between assessors.
VETiS Moderation meetings – November 2012
AIET requirements
Under our registration obligations we are required to undertake
validation and moderation at least once per year.
VETiS Moderation meetings – November 2012
Question:
How can we moderate tasks if students are completing
DIFFERENT assessment tasks?
How can we be sure the Assessment Tasks given to students
meet the principles of assessment and rules of evidence?
VETiS Moderation meetings – November 2012
ANSWER:
The only way we can easily do this is if everyone is giving
students the same Assessment Tasks....
.... so this is why we need you to use our learning and
assessment materials.
VETiS Moderation meetings – November 2012
So how do other RTO’s manage this process where schools
can use any materials they like?
The simple answer is, we don’t know.
VETiS Moderation meetings – November 2012
Our process of validation includes putting together a Learning
and Assessment strategy, a Training Plan, and a mapping
document.

Teachers using their own learning and assessment materials
would therefore need to provide us with all these things:
-Learning and Assessment strategy
- Training Plan
- Mapping document
- Obviously the learning and assessment materials that go with it.
Anyone wish to do this?
VETiS Moderation meetings – November 2012
Analyse student feedback
This provides us with evidence on areas including
training quality; work readiness; training conditions;
learner engagement.
We will provide you with student feedback from VET in
Schools for this year later in the workshop.
VETiS Moderation meetings – November 2012
Teacher feedback
From our perspective, we also need to get feedback from
you about our VET in Schools service to you. This can be
done online.

Any questions to this point?
VETiS Moderation meetings – November 2012
Next year we intend to provide each school with their own web
page, with access restricted by user name and password. The
web page will hold all of the required documentation for that
school – MOU, Vocational Competencies, PD forms, etc.
This way your coordinator will be able to see at a glance what has
been submitted and what has not.
We anticipate that we will start setting up these web pages
next week.
All documentation will therefore be completed electronically.
VETiS Moderation meetings – November 2012
Student enrolments
These will also be done online through our web site portal.
Go to http://www.aiet.edu.au
Click on ONLINE REGISTRATION
Click HERE for online registration for VET in Schools courses
Enter the password – vetinschools
Enter the details and click SUBMIT at the bottom of the page.
Students can therefore start registering NOW – the sooner the better. A list of
student enrolments for each school will be placed on each schools’ web page and
updated once a week. It will be responsibility of the coordinator and / or the
teacher to check the list on a regular basis to make sure that all students in the
class register.
VETiS Moderation meetings – November 2012
MODERATION OF STUDENT WORK
The idea of the moderation exercise is to work towards
creating more consistent assessment outcomes between
schools and between classes that use AIET as the RTO.
This is to promote fairness but also to assist in terms of
students who receive an ATAR score.
VETiS Moderation meetings – November 2012
In groups of three or four (depending on numbers present) we would like
you to look at and moderate approximately 25% of the units for the course;
over a period of 4 years, therefore, assuming we select different units each
year, we should therefore look at all units in the course.
Please make sure that between you, we look at both Unit 1& 2 and Unit 3 & 4
units.
Please complete the template provided for the activity.
