Unit 1 Literary Genres & Literary Elements 8/30 – 9/3
This week students will work at their own pace with their reading partner. All
assignments need to be completed by Friday. There will be a reading test and
vocabulary quiz this Friday. Mr. Zirkle will check your progress every day.
1. Learning Objective: Examine the characteristics of historical fiction and science
fiction
Read the following texts and complete the questions, activities, and online quizzes.
1. “Three Century Woman” pages 6-15
2. “The Fall of the Hindenburg” pages 16-19
Complete questions and online quizzes page 20
2. Learning Objective: Setting- s.w. describe the details of time and place
Read the “Third Level”. Answer the questions and complete the activity on the back of
the hand out. This hand out is a class set. Do not write on the handout.
3. Learning Objective: Determine point of view, characterization, tone, & mood
Choose one of the following stories, read it and complete the questions & online quiz.
1. “Papas Parrot” page 24-31 answer questions and complete online quiz
2. “An American Childhood” pages 50-59 answer questions and complete online quiz
3. “Barrio Boy” pages 68-74 complete questions; there is not an online quiz
Writing Assignment #1
Learning objective – demonstrate understanding of the characteristics of historical
fiction and science fiction.
Directions: Write two stories, one for each member in your group.
1. Pick an event to write about. Example: a character goes to a store
2. Research a historical event. Get a copy of your source of information.
3. Write a historical fiction version about the event you chose. Include the historical
event you researched in your story. Turn in your research with your story.
4. Write a science fiction version of your event. Be sure to include elements of science
and fantasy into you story.
Writing Assignment #2
Learning objective: write about an event from both narrative points of view.
Directions: Write two short stories, one for each member in your group.
1. Pick an event to write about. Example: a boy/girl talking to their parents
2. Write the first version of the event using first person narration
3. Write the second version of the event using third person narration
