Weekly Overviews Typically, weeks will begin with an overview of what is due as well as topics, concepts, questions, and techniques to consider. The overview is NOT to be used as a substitute for the reading itself. It is a guide only. Skipping the reading and instead just viewing or listening to the overview will cause you to miss ESSENTIAL information that you need for your assignments and essays. One of the biggest challenges for online students, especially those in an online English course, is the sheer amount of reading required, not only of assigned readings but also of assignments and instructions. Grading! Each week will begin on Sunday and end on Saturday. Assignments will typically be due Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays by 11:59pm. Your grades will be calculated based on three main categories: Essays & Response Papers (80%) Participation in Discussion (15%) 2 Quizzes (5%) The number one reason students fail an online course is that they do not have or take the time to complete the assignments by the deadline. Poor time management also sometimes leads to more serious issues, like plagiarism. Any work that is plagiarized or contains plagiarism, whether intentional or unintentional, will receive an “F.” Essays There will be three essays and eight response papers throughout the semester. Each will be based upon what we are reading during that time. The essays are between 150-250 points each. One, the midterm essay, must be written onsite (in the Testing & Tutoring Center in the McCarthy Library on the NVC main campus). Response papers are 25 points each. All essays and response papers must be turned in through Turnitin.com. Late essays and response papers will receive half credit. Failure to submit any of the essays or more than 2 of the response papers will result in an automatic “F” in the course. Discussions There will be a variety of discussion boards available to you throughout the semester about the readings and concepts being covered. You will earn points for participating in discussion: by posting your original responses to the readings and prompts about them, by posting your own questions about the readings and concepts, and by responding to the posts of your classmates. You will earn ten points for participating in each discussion and fulfilling the posting/responding requirements. Posts to discussions cannot be made up if missed, and late posts will not be accepted. Quizzes There will be 2 quizzes in the first five weeks of the course: A two-part quiz on integrating quotations : short answer followed by application of the skills (Week 2), and a short answer quiz on the literary criticisms (Week 5). The purpose of the quizzes is to test your understanding of the material and to prepare and enable you to apply the skills and concepts in your writing throughout the course. Each quiz is worth 25 points. Like discussions, quizzes cannot be made up if missed and will not be accepted late. Please take time to download and review the syllabus for all requirements and policies. The last page of the syllabus is a Course Contract. Please fill it out and email it back to me.
