Careful reading of the novels is imperative
Spark notes do not replace reading the text. They may help in understanding the themes, motifs, symbols, etc. of a text.

How to Read a Novel
Carefully
—paying attention—not listening to music with lyrics, while watching TV, or using social media
Closely
—annotating—making notes about words, themes, symbol, and questions while reading
This process cannot be rushed or accomplished in one sitting .

A’s—or lack thereof
I don’t GIVE A’s, your child earns them.
An A on an assignment means the essay or project demonstrated excellence in vocabulary, analysis, creativity, & higher order thinking skills.
An A does NOT mean “good enough” or “average” or “above average.”
In 11 th grade IB your child will be graded according to IB WORLD standards.

Projects
 There will be several group and individual projects assigned throughout the year.
 Your child will receive specific directions on the project when it is assigned.

Passing score is required to obtain MYP certificate.
Assigned in next few days
Due March 7th.
Requires a advisor.
Student checks in & consults advisor with questions/concerns as they arise.


Reflect student’s interests.
 Parents sign their child’s timeline/signature form every month.
 This is so you are aware of how they are progressing—or not.

Close & careful reading is necessary for a passing score.
Failing scores are an indicator that student is skimming or not paying attention while reading.

Plagiarism
Plagiarism is not tolerated in the IB program.
 Students must use their own ideas and thoughts. If another person’s ideas and thoughts are used proper Modern Language
Association (MLA) citations must be provided.

Materials Needed
 College ruled paper, blue or black pens
 A binder
 A yellow, green, or orange highlighter
 In order to stay organized and thus successful, students must bring their materials everyday.
 Most books can be borrowed from an upperclassman or purchased used or new from
Amazon.

