Use the symbols in the example or develop your own "key"/legend to indicate the nature of family relationships. Your genogram should include the following information about you, your parents and your grandparents (you may also include your great-grandparents, if you wish): * Name and date of birth. If deceased, year and cause of death - may also include other relevant medical history * Other variables such as; Cultural/heritage origins, languages, educational attainment, occupation, talents/interests/hobbies & religion * Number of siblings in each generation * Marital history, including years of marriage, divorces, years of singlehood, and date of remarriage * You should also include some key characteristics about that individual - personality traits or temperament or family roles (e.g. the blacksheep, the mediator) * May also include family traditions (i.e. activities, foods, places etc...) which may be traced back to that person * Indicate the nature of the relationships between individuals as per the example **You should also refer to last year’s text Intentional Interviewing and Counseling (6th Edition), pages 303-305 for a visual of a genogram and additional information in regard to preparing one. Included with your assignment should be a typed Conclusion (a minimum of 4-5 pages in length) indicating what you have learned as a result of this assignment: You should interpret patterns or differences you have noticed and highlight impressions you have formed in regard to your own family's genogram and what you have learnt about your own family as a result of completing the assignment. You should also draw conclusions about how a genogram may be useful in working with families or clients in the field. Marks for assignment are organized as follows; 1) Presentation, organization and creativity = 40% 2) Conclusions = 60% 2) INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH PAPER ASSIGNMENT Outline of Paper Due: Wednesday, March 18th, 2011 (5%) Research Paper Due: Wednesday, April 15th, 2011 (25%) A research paper requires that you look at a variety of resources to determine what the current literature and research says about a topic and to contrast the different findings. The paper is primarily objective/factual and should include next to no personal opinion except in the Intro & Conclusion. It should include some kind of definition or hypothesis (your personal theory) and some statistics as to the prevalence of the problem. You should also include more than one theory or approach to understanding the causes of the problem. You should also include a section that indicates typical responses, resources or interventions that may assist families in dealing with the issue/topic. You may have drawn a conclusion as a result of your field placement experience and studies to date and this is the opportunity to examine if research supports or refutes your conclusion. You may choose any topic related & or/relevant to issues/stressors facing families. For instance: any aspect of family violence, the impact of specific mental illnesses on families, adoption, family therapy, the impact of divorce and separation on families or poverty etc… The Outline: The outline for your paper should be 1-2 pages with an “Introduction” which states your hypothesis or research question. Your outline should identify the general areas you will be exploring (i.e. headings and organization of the body of the paper). Your outline should also include, at least three of the reference materials you will be using, properly cited. The Research Paper: 10-12 type-written, double-spaced, cover page, introduction, conclusion, in-text citation and bibliography (all the typical research paper stuff!). All referencing of materials must be done according to APA guidelines (if you require further direction you should see Dianna McAleer about this) You must use at least 3 different types of sources - i.e. books, magazines, journals, newspapers, web-sites etc... in your paper and include all reference materials in a bibliography. You should draw conclusions as a result of your research about whether your initial theory was supported or not by what you found. You must attach your marked outline with my feedback to your final paper or lose marks. 3) GROUP RESOURCE MANUAL ASSIGNMENT DUE DATE: Thursday, April 22nd, 2011 - 15% In groups of 4 students will research and submit a section for your “Resource Manual” which will identify resources available to families in the Ottawa-Carleton area. You will need to first identify a list of headings for key service/resource areas that would be useful to families (i.e. housing, financial planning, family planning, addictions, recreation etc...) The list should be as all-inclusive as possible. Under each heading you should identify local community resources that would be appropriate or helpful - specifically you should provide the correct address, phone number and a brief descriptor of each service/resource and whether there is a cost associated with the service. The work should be type-written and compiled in a user-friendly manner. Marks will be given for presentation and organization as well as accuracy of information and how inclusive the resources are. Each group member should have a copy of this work to include in their resource manual, however only one copy needs to be submitted for grading Examples of previous groups’ assignments are in my office for anyone who would like to take a look.
