Research and competence building
• Formation of academic developers at core
(as understood within institutional contexts)
• 6 partners (UiO, UiT, UU, OU, UNCH, UCD),
researchers and academic developers
• UiO: Leading responsibility: Distributed
responsibility for different activitises
Twofold aim
• To develop and strengthen communities of practice
among researchers and academic developers to build
competence in academic development and
understand the formation of academic developers.
• To contribute new knowledge on the formation and
competence of academic developers in their work
with university teachers and leaders, knowledge that
will subsequently be used to improve study programs
and teaching
To gain knowledge on formation: how values and
aspirations are lived out in practice

international research literature on academic development
the articulated values and aspirations of five universities
how university aspirations are interpreted by academic developers
how academic developers in five universities believe their values,
goals and aspirations change in the course of their work
how academic developers enact their values, goals, and aspirations
new teaching practices that encourage education for the public good
how a virtual community of practice of academic developers and
researchers might increase pedagogical repertoires and research
capability
a new research method based on interactive
communication/deliberations .
Design
1)
Document analyses and interviews with university leaders at
different levels and academic developers (five
universities) (insider –outsider approach for interviews and
analyses – semi structured qualtitative interviews )
2)
Develop a base line for interventions at UiO and UiT (Norwegian
context) (Action research inspired)
Try out interventions at UiO and UiT: Developed in collaboration
with university teachers/leaders – observed by outsider
researcher
3)
Analyses and sharing of experiences (nationally and
internationally)
4)
Dissemination (running and final activity)
Running activity: Developing and trying out in practice cyberspace
communication platforms – as a support to face to face meetings – and as
an arena for a CoP for researchers and academic developers
