FRIDAY Friday: ___11__/__21___ OBJECTIVE…#_9-11_____ TOPIC: Proteins & Lipids Daily Work Grade- Exit Activity from Block day DW GRADE: 2 1 0 DO NOW •Q: List the macromolecules of Carbs and Lipids. •A: monosaccharides/triglycerides Missing Work Today’s Objectives 12---DESCRIBE the role of carbon in living organisms 13---IDENTIFY/ FAMILIARIZE yourself with the four major families of biological macromolecules 14---COMPARE the function of each group of macromolecules Vocabulary -organic / inorganic -macromolecule -polymer -carbohydrate -lipid -protein -amino acid -nucleic acid -nucleotide These should be done by test day! Proteins Chapter 6 Proteins Chemistry in Biology A compound made of small carbon compounds called amino acids Amino acids are small compounds that are made of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, and sometimes sulfur. Characteristics of Proteins • Amino acids (monomers) are the basic building blocks of polypeptides (polymers) and polypeptides form proteins. • Functions: – structural components of cells – catalyzing chemical reactions (enzymes) – transporting substances within cells – messenger molecules (hormones) Chapter 6 Proteins Chemistry in Biology Amino acids have a central carbon atom. One of the four carbon bonds is with hydrogen. The other three bonds are with an amino group (–NH2), a carboxyl group (–COOH), and a variable group (–R). Chapter 6 Proteins Chemistry in Biology Chapter 6 Structures of Proteins Chemistry in Biology The number and the order in which the amino acids are joined define the protein’s primary structure. After an amino acid chain is formed, it folds into a unique three-dimensional shape, which is the protein’s secondary structure, such as a helix or a pleat. Summary • Write of brief, comprehensive summary (3-4 sentences) of your notes, focusing on the main ideas and concepts. • Be prepared to share you summary with your classmates. Chapter 6 Chemistry in Biology Nucleic Acids Nucleic acids are complex macromolecules that store and transmit genetic information. Nucleic acids are made of smaller repeating subunits called nucleotides, composed of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and hydrogen atoms.
