Guest can enjoy a BBQ lunch at Dundas Castle. 18 Highland Games at Gosford House – Option 2 This morning the group will transfer to Gosford House for a BBQ and a morning of activities. The home of the Earls of Wemyss, this extensive mansion, lies 30 minutes from Edinburgh. The house contains a remarkable art collection, primarily due to the 10th Earl, who was a passionate and genuine collector who ignored the current fashion and bought what he actually liked. The collection includes works by Botticelli, Murillo and Rubens. The grounds are extensive and can be used Highland Games. Highland games are traditional scottish games which take place throughout the summer. The group will be divided into clans which will rotate around a selection of traditional games. Watch a 15 minute demonstration by your instructors who will perform ‘highland’ activities. Now it’s your turn! It is fun to watch your colleagues try their skills on the ten traditional games with time to go back at the end to have another go if you like before lunch. The BBQ will be set up outside the house but guests can use the house for seating depending on the weather 19 Dinner Suggestions 20 Loch Fyne Seafood Restaurant – Dinner Option1 Surrounded by a lively fishing community, Loch Fyne Edinburgh offers an authentic dining experience, with views of the picturesque harbour. The rustic, character-filled fish market building dates back to the 1890s. Specialising in fresh oysters and shellfish, Loch Fyne restaurants present an abundance of delicious fish and seafood dishes. Favourites include the hot and cold shellfish platters, along with the Loch Fyne moules marinières, or seasonal specials like dressed Cromer crab and pan fried fillet of sea bass with artichoke. All of the seafood at Loch Fyne restaurant is sustainably sourced, either from abundant wild stocks or responsible farming. 21 The Dome – Dinner Option 2 The Dome is a magnificent building, located in the heart of Edinburgh and which dates back over 200 years. The site of the Dome was originally the site of the Old Physicians Hall, built and designed by James Craig, the celebrated planner of Edinburgh’s New Town. At one time a former bank, the building has been tastefully restored to provide a stylish setting for dinners, meetings etc... As guests enter through the Corinthian Portico, they can savour the elegance, comfort and service that the Dome offers today. The building is a wondrous sight - with ornate ceilings, sculptured panels and wonderful stained glass windows. 22 Tour and activities 23 Glamis Castle – Option 1 Glamis Castle has a fascinating and exciting history. It has been the family home of the Earls of Strathmore since 1372, when King Robert II (the first of the Stuart Kings) of Scotland gave the castle to Sir John Lyon. On arrival they will enjoy a coffee/tea with the traditional Scottish shortbread at the Castle. Legends and myths have grown around the castle. King Malcolm II was said to have been murdered here in 1540 James V. There is said to be a secret room where a nobleman played cards with the devil himself. Glamis today look more like a French Chateau than a medieval fortress, because it was extensively restored in the 17th and 18th centuries. The original tower house remains at the centre of the castle today. It has, of course, close connections with the present Royal Family, being the childhood home of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and Her Royal Highness The Princess Margaret was born here in 1930. Tour time: 4 hours 24 St Andrews City Tour – Option 1 St Andrews which is also the seat of Scotland’ oldest university. Highlights not to be missed include St Andrews cathedral, the castle and the beautiful beaches. The town has also developed a reputation for its shopping experience which include several independent shops and boutiques as well as a selection of charming cafes, bars and restaurants. The town has a very calm and old fashioned feel to it. Many of the original buildings have survived and almost the entire centre of the town consists of “listed” buildings. With many narrow alleyways linking the streets, there are numerous small tearooms & curiosity shops to expire. 25 Cruise Loch Lomond – Option 2 Described by many as Queen of Scottish Lochs and 'Gateway to the Highlands', Loch Lomond measures 23 miles long and five miles wide, making it the single largest expanse of fresh water in Great Britain. Over 200 metres in depth, it's also Scotland’s third deepest Loch. But it's what happens on and around the water that perhaps makes the Loch most special. Wildlife, a mysterious floating island, stately homes, ruins - Loch Lomond has them all in abundance, all just waiting to be explored. This two hour round trip will take you past Cameron House Hotel and the world-renowned Loch Lomond Golf Course, continuing onwards through the narrows to the magnificent Ben Lomond and the historic village of Luss, before returning along the west shore to Balloch. The Silver Dolphin is quite simply the most luxurious passenger boat operating in Scotland. The astonishing view is tempting, but the aromas from the wood burning oven creating the best pizza for miles, just swing it for you. 27 Glengoyne Distillery – Option 2 Glengoyne Distillery was established in 1833 in the Campsie Hills, 14 miles from the centre of Glasgow. Because of its location, the distillery only just qualifies as a Highland Malt Whisky, straddling the imaginary line from Dundee to Greenock, which separates the Highland from the Lowland malts. The distillery is owned by the Edrington Group, and produces a light-bodied malt, which is clean and fresh on the nose and palate. As well as the 10-year old, the distillery also produces a 17-year old, which is well worth a try. Take a tour of this picture’s distillery and discover the secrets to making Scotland’s national drink. There will of course be the opportunity to sample the whisky. Enhance the experience with a VIP tour or a master blender tour. 28 Evening Activity 29 Edinburgh Ghost Tour The group will enjoy a ghost tour of Edinburgh’s Old Town and the hidden underground vaults. The tour takes you through the wynds and courtyards and the storyteller who is dressed in costume will tell you the tales of Edinburgh’s gruesome past. Witches, torture, body snatchers and ghosts are all part of this fascinating tour of Edinburgh. Recently uncovered, the historic haunted vaults beneath Edinburgh's South Bridge were abandoned and filled in for over two hundred years. The site of many supernatural phenomena over the past few years, the vaults are the perfect place for the telling of ghost stories! They are also ideal for describing the social history of Scotland's capital. See the workshops of 18thC tradesmen, the remains of the slum dwellings, an ancient vault where gold bullion was once stored, and find out why the vaults were abandoned! The library, begun in 1810 to a design by Robert Reid with principal interiors by William Stark, originally comprised a Lower Library for the Society and an Upper Library for the Faculty of Advocates. The entrance hall and stair were then reconstructed by William Playfair and again by William Burn thereby linking the two. Today the building lends itself as a magnificent setting for an evening function.
