Dąbrowa Górnicza is a city of contrasts. Despite its
industrial character you can see a lot of precious
specimen of plants and animals.
Parodoxically, within city’s administrative area there
are over 60 protected plant species, that is more than
in most national parks.
Dąbrowa Górnicza is situated by the bifurcation of the
two longest rivers of Silesian Uplands - Biała and Czarna
Przemsza.
The first mention of Dąbrowa Górnicza
appeared in 1726 in parish register of The Holy
Trinity Church in Będzin.
In 1795, as a result of the third
partition of Poland, Dąbrowa was
incorporated into Prussia (New Silesia).
In 1799 the first historic map of this area
was drawn. According to the map the
early town was known as „Old
Dąbrowa”.
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries
Dąbrowa was the biggest centre of the
technical intelligentsia in Zagłębie, due to the
School of Mining Engineering called
„Sztygarka”. The history of this school is full
of glorious episodes of Polish mining and
revolutionary conflicts .
DĄBROWA - GÓRNICZ ZWANĄ
A long, long time ago a small village situated between
oak groves was owned by the Koniecpolski family. They
changed the common name of „Dąbrowa” into
„Koniecpolskie”. The property was managed by a very
spiteful man whose favourite saying was „to hell with
you”. The hellish ‘authorities’ were irritated by the man
but they didn’t know how to stalk him to make his soul
burn in the cauldron of soot because he was a very
religious man.
One day he suggested as a joke to a good-natured lumberjack cutting down
a large oak grove. The lumberjack was supposed to be paid after the work is
done. He knew that this job would take at least one month of hard work. One of
the devils took on human appearance and got the job as a woodcutter. During
one night he cut down whole forest and in the morning he went to the owner to
receive the payment. The owner was absolutely astonished and he didn’t pay the
whole sum of money. The devil came back to hell and told about the incident.
That was exactly the hellish ‘authorities’ waited for!
The devil got back to the owner to point out his
mistake. The said as usually „to hell with me if I
cheated you”. As he said that, the devils took his
soul to hell. When Koniecpolski found out about
it, he decided to sell his possessions to the
government. The area was called „Dąbrowa”
again and when coal was found the nickname
„Górnicza” was added.
ECONOMY
The main branches of economy of the Silesian
Voivodeship are services and industry.
The least number of people work in farming and
forestry.
