Name __________________________________________________________________ Date __________ Period ______ Cellular Respiration Organization So let me get this straight…… ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As you discovered in the predict, observe, explain activity and the respiration and homeostasis lab, breathing rate and heart rate change with exercise. Another thing that was realized is that the amount of carbon dioxide produced, as we exercise, also changes. But, what happens, in the alveoli of our lungs and the red blood cells of our capillaries, is also affected. Focus Question How do your circulatory system and respiratory system work together to maintain homeostasis when your need for energy changes? Materials Different colored sticky notes (in case students would like to group concepts by color) Different colored markers (in case students would like to group concepts by color) Large piece of chart paper Procedure 1. Get into groups of 3 or 4. 2. Write each word from Table 1 on its own sticky notes. 3. Create a concept map that answers the focus question above and includes all of the words from Table 1. 4. Be sure to discuss with your group justifications for why you organized the sticky notes in the way that you did. 5. Hang your finished concept map in the specified location in the classroom Table 1 Lungs Exercise Glucose Circulatory System Alveoli Capillaries Red Blood Cells Respiratory System Humans Oxygen Breathing Cells Homeostasis Carbon Dioxide Blood Vessel Food Exhale Inhale Energy Blood Group Convention Station Manager – Pick one member of your group to be stationed next to your concept map during the sharing activity. This group member will explain to other group explorers why your concept map was arranged the way it was and how it answers the focus question. Explorer – The rest of the group members will be explorers. They will travel around the room to observe other groups’ concept maps, listen to other station managers’ explanations of their concept maps, ask questions, and record information to bring back to their own station manager. ©Copyright 2014 – all rights reserved www.cpalms.org Name __________________________________________________________________ Date __________ Period ______ NOTE: Wait until you are told to rotate to your first group. Explorers will have 3-5 minutes per visit with three station managers. Revision Now that you have gotten a chance to explore other groups’ concept maps and speak with other station managers, return to your original group. Spend time discussing and making revisions to your concept maps. What revisions did your group make to the concept map? Why did your group feel these revisions were necessary? ©Copyright 2014 – all rights reserved www.cpalms.org
