1. Thesis Student Space
I am pleased to let you know that the house at 39a Creyke Road is to be made available to
thesis students as a study and social space with hotdesks for private study, space for group
study and a room for one-on-one sessions with SOAR Advisors (see below).
As soon as the space is fitted out and becomes available I will let you know. To ensure
continuity of availability of space for thesis students it is important that the space is used!
2. SOAR (Support, Opportunity, Advice, Resources) Peer Advice
From February onwards a number of SOAR Peer Advisors will offer a FREE peer-to-peer
support service for doctoral students in various aspects of research skills training and career
development. Doctoral students will be able to sign-up for sessions with a peer advisor. Full
details to follow.
3. PG Website and Doctoral Forms
The first release of the University’s new Web Content Management System has resulted in some
unexpected changes to the PG Studies website which unfortunately is making some pages
harder to navigate and includes some incorrect links. We are working on this but please be
patient and if you have any difficulties please contact the PG Office (postgraduateoffice@canterbury.ac.nz).
Please use the following link to download all forms – please ensure that you are using the
most up-to-date version of forms by always downloading from here
(http://www.canterbury.ac.nz/postgrad/Forms/Forms_for_PhD.shtml). Please be aware that
the forms for doctoral students are being revised and updated in the next few months. Forms
that have previously been labelled as “PhD” forms will now (mostly) be labelled “Doctoral”
forms and will be completed by PhD, DMA and EdD students.
4. Disastrous Doctorates Workshop – Wednesday March 4th Wellington
This workshop in Wellington on Wednesday 4 March 2015 is hosted by the Joint Centre for
Disaster Research (JCDR) at Massey University with an optional field trip the next day to
explore the hazardscape of Wellington. The workshop is a forum for doctoral students
working in a disaster-related field. It is an inter-disciplinary workshop and welcomes students
from all disciplines – last year students from engineering, geology, geography, psychology,
law, business and emergency management attended. It is a friendly inclusive day promoting
linkages and networking between researchers.
The workshop welcomes PhD candidates from New Zealand and overseas. The workshop
will include a 3-Minute Thesis component as well as breakout sessions and a panel discussion
from professionals who will share insights on completing a PhD and the various pathways
after graduating. A new feature this year is an optional poster session.
If you are interested please see the attached letter and submit your abstract online. To register
for the workshop, please fill out the application online at: http://goo.gl/forms/asEjBNV6H2. To submit
your abstract online, please go to: http://goo.gl/forms/fyVuIuuUOt. . The application deadline is
20 February 2015.
5. Internship Opportunity
Two postgraduate internships are available at Tait Radio, supported by Callaghan Innovation
as detailed through the link below (cut and paste in to your browser).
http://www.taitradio.com/about-us/careers/new-zealand
These internships require software engineering, computer science, networking or data
analytics skills but are also available to people from maths/science backgrounds if they have
had some practical software experience.
