2. SHOWCASE
The annual thesis student conference is to be held on Thursday November 19th – put the date
in your diary. All thesis students are invited to participate – the format will be like a typical
conference with oral presentations of ~15 minutes followed by questions. Feedback will be
provided by academic judges and there will be PRIZES. It is a great way to get confident at
giving presentations and to meet other students and hear about their research.
The event is being organized by PGSA, UCSA and myself and will also be open to thesis
students from Lincoln University and from the Otago University Christchurch School of
Medicine.
To submit an abstract complete the form here and return as an email attachment to
showcase@canterbury.ac.nz by November 6th.
3. Budget Calculator
The US Council of Graduate Studies has produced a budget calculator to assist graduate
students with budgeting during their degree which you might find it useful. Click on the link
below to be directed to the calculator.

4. Depositing Theses in the UC Library (after examination)
From October 1st there will be a new system for the deposit of theses in the library after the
examination process is complete. Currently it is the student who is responsible for depositing
the final version of the thesis in the library. From October 1st the PG Office rather than the
student will be responsible for this. At the time of thesis submission you will receive an
Information Sheet detailing the entire examination process – extracts relevant to thesis
deposit are examination are provided below. If you have already submitted your thesis (or do
so in the next two weeks) you will receive an email from the PG Office explaining the
transition. If you have any questions please contact the PG Office who will be able to provide
you with more information.
PhD Students:
 After your oral examination the examiners will usually indicate what their recommendation to the
Dean of Postgraduate Research will be regarding the award of the PhD.
o See the form at http://www.canterbury.ac.nz/postgrad/examiners/phd_oral.shtml.
o The most common outcome is that a candidate is asked to make amendments to the
thesis that have to be submitted to a nominated person (senior supervisor; oral chair;
oral examiner) by a given date.
 If this is the outcome for you then the PG Office will forward the required
amendments (Part B of the form above) to you as soon as is possible after the
oral examination.
 If you have not heard from the PG Office within a week of your oral examination
please contact them at postgraduate-office@canterbury.ac.nz.
 Once you have received details of the amendments that are required please
discuss these with your supervisory team!
o If the outcome from your oral is anything other than the options above, the Dean of
Postgraduate Research will contact you.
Once you have completed the required amendments you will need to submit these to the PG
Office (postgraduate-office@canterbury.ac.nz) along with a cover letter. The PG Office will
forward the amended thesis to the nominated person(s) for sign-off. Once the amendments
are approved the PG Office will submit the final amended version of your thesis to the
University Library and you will be advised that you are eligible to graduate.
Masters Students:
 Once your final grade has been determined the PG Office will submit your thesis to the University
Library and you will then be advised that you are eligible to graduate.
