Group Presentation – Section 1 Biome: Animal: Where is the biome located? Does your animal live on a specific continent, hemisphere, or country? Biome Characteristics: (dense canopy, large # of species there, trees never lose leaves, frozen ground, etc) * * * * * Physical Features (landforms, bodies of water, canyons, islands, etc.) * * * Climate (include specific details such as averages) (hot-rainy, hot-dry, temperate, mild sub-tropical, polar, etc.) * * * Vegetation (specific) * * * 1 Section2 ---- Habitat: What is the specific habitat of your species? Describe the environment in detail. (Abiotic and biotic factors) What kind of “house” does your animal have? (describe in detail) What is your animal’s niche? Section 3 ---- Adaptations: physical & behavioral At least 3 physical adaptations – include the purpose of the adaptation * * * At least 3 behavioral adaptations – include the purpose of the adaptation * * * Interesting Facts List some fun facts about your animal species that has not already been said * * * 2 Group Biome/Animal Presentation Rubric 0 World Map – displays biome Missing or incomplete Biome Characteristics Missing or incomplete Physical Features Missing or incomplete Climate Missing or incomplete Vegetation Missing or incomplete Habitat Missing or incomplete Physical Adaptations Missing or incomplete Behavioral Adaptations Missing or incomplete Interesting Facts Missing or incomplete Pictures of your animal Missing or incomplete Novice 1 Apprentice 2 Distinguished 4 Color, neatness, biome title, compass, map key At least 5 characteristics listed At least 3 characteristics At least 3 specific details are included At least 3 are listed Abiotic, biotic factor, “house” and niche A minimum of 3 physical adaptations w/purpose A minimum of 3 behavioral adaptations w/purpose At least 3 unique facts are listed Multiple pictures clearly displaying animal 3 different types of references listed References Spelling more than 5 errors on conventions 3-4 errors on conventions 2 or fewer errors on conventions Overall Display Poor Quality Low Quality Medium Quality Presentation No presentation Total Proficient 3 High quality WOW! Each card will include a picture of the animal, it’s habitat, status (carnivore, herbivore, omnivore, scavenger), and the impact this animal has on its ecosystem. Then you will create an “answer card.” The answer card will show how all of the cards interact. The simplest way to do this is to draw a food web with all of the animals and arrows showing the flow of energy. Lion Grassy Plains Consumer Buffalo, Zebra Man, Hyena They kill the weak animals in the ecosystem leaving only the strong of the species around. Restaurant Menu (partner) Instructions: 1. Turn a blank sheet of computer paper sideways and fold it into thirds. 2. Unfold it and number the sections on the back from left to right 5, 6, and 1. I know it seems wrong right now, but in the end it will be right. 3. Flip it over and number the sections on the front – again from left to right 2, 3, and 4. Now complete each section as follows: Section 1: Write the name of the restaurant, hours of operation, and draw a picture to go along with it. Section 2,3,4: Complete food web (carnivores, herbivores, omnivores, scavengers, decomposers, plants, and SUN) Completely colored or done on the computer (use the WHOLE paper) Include arrows to show flow of energy 7 or more creative "food items" with prices Section 5: 3 Drinks and 3 desserts for the restaurant Section 6: Extra information about your restaurant (ecosystem). 5 Example: 5 6 1 2 3 4 Restaurant Menu Rubric Project section Section 1 Section 5 Section 6 Points Worth ____/ 3 ____/ 6 ____/ 3 Section 2, 3, 4 ____/ 14 Neatness/Creativity Color Total Points ____/ 6 ____/ 3 ____/ 35 Name, picture, hours 3 drinks/3 desserts Extra information (2) Arrows indicate correct flow of energy, (1) sun, (1) accurate information, (1) food web, (1) consumers, (1) producers, (7) prices Correct layout, neatly done, creativity shown Entire menu is colored 4. Annotated Illustration (individual) On an 8 ½ by 11 piece of computer paper you will create a “scene” from you ecosystem. You will then place a caption next to each item that is two – three sentences long. You scene should depict the following things: 1. Weather of the ecosystem – your caption must describe the weather and times of year this weather occurs. 2. At least 2 landforms – your caption can name famous landforms found in your ecosystem, animals that live among these landforms, or how your landform affects the ecosystem. 3. At least 5 consumers from this ecosystem– your caption must include the animal’s name and one fact about it. (This can be only 1 sentence long.) 4. At least 2 producers from this ecosystem– your caption must describe what consumes them and how often they grow 6 Annotated Illustration Rubric Weather _______/ 3 (1) Weather – caption (2) Landform _______/4 (2) Landforms – caption (2) Consumer _______/10 (5) Animals –name and fact (5) Producer _______/6 (2) Producers – caption (4) Neatness/color _______/4 (2) Neatness – (2) color Complete sentences ______/8 Each caption is at least two sentences, correct spelling, and punctuation Total _______/ 35 5. Advertisement (individual) You will create an advertisement to attract people to your ecosystem. It must be on an 8 ½ by 11 piece of computer paper. The entire page must be used. Include a “hook” or slogan to attract tourists. At the bottom you must include a paragraph summary of your topic. You may do an advertisement over one of the following things: - Rare animals - Famous animals only found in that ecosystem - Rare plants - Famous plants only found in that ecosystem Come watch a glow brighter than the Moon Meet the firefly squid. Growing no longer than three inches in length, the firefly squid earns points for putting on a dazzling display. A firefly squid is covered with thousands of light-emitting organs known as photophores that can blink in unison or separately. Firefly squids are found in the West Pacific Ocean, most famously off the coast of Japan. 7 Hook or slogan Name of animal/plant Name of ecosystem Advertisement Rubric ________/ 2 ________/1 ________/1 Paragraph summary ________/6 Display ________/4 Total ________/ 14 Catchy & original (3) At least 6 sentences long, (1) correct information, (2) spelling, Entire paper used, colorful, eye catching, easy to read 6. Wanted Poster (individual) You will create a wanted poster for either an endangered animal or extinct animal in your ecosystem. It must be on an 8 ½ by 11 piece of computer paper. The entire page must be used. Include a “hook” or slogan to attract people to look at your poster. At the bottom you must include a paragraph summary of why the animal is endangered or extinct. Postcard (individual) You will create a postcard on a 4 by 6 notecard (or on the computer.) The front of the card must be a scene from your ecosystem. Also include a 45-cent stamp of an animal found in that ecosystem. On the back you will write a letter to an environmentalist about ways that you plan on improving this ecosystem. This needs to be in letter format and be at least 6 sentences long.
