Course Description
Physics B is the second course in a two-semester series. Students will be introduced to
the basic concepts of magnetism, light and optics, sound, waves, quantum mechanics,
particle physics, and relativity.
Course Objectives
When you finish this course, you will be able to:
 Describe a point charge in a magnetic field
 Apply Faraday’s law and Lenz’ law to electromagnetic systems
 Draw ray diagrams of light reflection and refraction
 Apply Snell’s law to relate the directions of incident and refracted rays
 Analyze images formed by lenses and mirrors
 Explain the properties of sound, such as pitch, loudness, and wavelength
 Describe the properties of waves and their interactions
 Explain the phenomena of diffraction and interference of waves
 Recall the principles of quantum theory and that light is transmitted as quanta and
has wave-like properties
 Understand how radioactive isotopes decay
 Explain Einstein’s special and general theories of relativity
