In the mid 1970s, alcohol was a factor in over
60% of traffic fatalities. Traffic crashes were
the leading cause of alcohol-related deaths
and two-thirds of traffic deaths among persons
aged 16 to 20 involved alcohol.

Since the early 1980s, alcohol-related traffic
deaths per population have been cut in half
with the greatest proportional declines among
persons 16-20 years old.

A car breathalyzer is one of the last barriers to
drunk driving prevention for DUI offenders
who want to stay out of jail. A car
breathalyzer, also known as an ignition
interlock device, requires drivers to give a
breath sample prior to starting their cars. If
the breathalyzer detects a certain amount of
alcohol, the car simply will not start.

France has already taken large strides in
reducing its road fatalities over the past
decade, cutting its numbers by more than 40
percent since 2001. The country also has a
very low blood-alcohol content (BAC) limit;
just 0.05, compared to the U.S. limit of 0.08-though much of Europe has similar, or even
stricter, limits than France. Sweden and
Norway, for example, limit BAC to just 0.02.

Each day, more than 15 people are killed
and more than 1,200 people are injured in
crashes that were reported to involve a
distracted driver.1 Distracted driving is
driving while doing another activity that
takes your attention away from driving;
these activities can increase the chance of
a motor vehicle crash.
What solutions are currently available?
Iris cameras perform recognition detection of a person’s identity by
mathematical analysis of the random patterns that are visible within
the iris of an eye from some distance. It combines computer vision,
pattern recognition, statistical inference and optics.
Of all the biometric devices and scanners available today, it is
generally conceded that iris recognition is the most accurate. The
automated method of iris recognition is relatively young, existing in
patent since only 1994.
