Alumni Reunion Announcement The alumni reunion will be Friday evening, October 6, 2012 (weekend of the USC Georgia Football Game). Parents Weekend The parents weekend is scheduled for Friday, Nov 16 – Sunday, Nov 18, the USC Wofford game. Mother Sons Weekend The Mother Sons Weekend, sponsored by the Mothers of Minerva, will be the weekend of Feb 22-23, 2013. Karen Dunaway Karen Dunaway, mother to Brother Connor, has agreed to be chairperson for Mothers of Minerva weekend in Feb 2013, as well as Parents Weekend Nov 9. Chapter News The grades are in, and the chapter did well for spring semester 2012. The Chapter achieved a cumulative semester GPA of a 3.02, and a new member GPA of 3.14. He was also a member of our chapter. Details here. William A. "Bill" Carr, 86, Class of 1946, passed away Monday, May 14, 2012 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born in Cairo, GA, a son of the late William A. and Ethel Lewis Carr, Mr. Carr was a graduate of Erskine College and received his Masters degree from the University of Georgia. He was head football coach at Liberty High School, Easley High School and Spartanburg High School from 1948 to 1980 and served as Mayor of Easley from 1983 until 1999. Mr. Carr was on the Board of Directors of Peoples National Bank and a member of First Baptist Church, Spartanburg. He was National High School Coach of the Year (1978), received the Order of the Palmetto (1978), and was inducted into the South Carolina Coaches Athletic Hall of Fame (1994). He was also in the Easley High School Athletic Hall of Fame as well as the City of Easley Civic Hall of Fame. In 1999 he received the Silver Crescent. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Doris Lewis Carr of the home; two daughters, Pam Carr of Greenville and Kitty C. Smith and husband, Steve, of Spartanburg; two grandsons, Brandon Smith and Alex Smith; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Carr was predeceased by a brother and one half-brother and by a sister and two half-sisters. National The SAE Record Issue is now online here. Community Service SAE’s First Annual Fund Raiser for Balefire was held on Friday afternoon, April 13 in Columbia at the AMF Columbia Lanes on Bush River Road. Balefire is a local organization that reaches out to teenagers with substance abuse problems. Organizations, alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends participated. Each team was made up of six people. The entry fee was $150 per team or $25 per person (included two hours of bowling and cook-out at SAE). Businesses were encouraged to sponsor a team(s) and we provided the bowlers. He was with New Day Financial as a compliance manager after graduating from Carolina. Evan graduated with a Risk Management and Finance Degree. Ian Schneider ’06 has been a Cash Equity Sales Trading Analyst with Morgan Stanley in London, England since 2011. The quick-casual chain specializes in made-to-order chicken fingers, Buffalo wings, sandwiches and salads. The other local licensees are Tripp Clayton, Chap Johnston, Brad Dailey and Matt Kilpatrick. The business partners opened their first Zaxby's in Summerville in 2005 and since then have built seven more in the area, in North Charleston and Moncks Corner and on James Island. Their restaurants have provided continued community service through the Make A Wish Foundation of South Carolina. “We are proud to serve the Lowcountry and are happy to help out a great organization like the Make-A-Wish Foundation,” said Chip Johnston. Ben was married to Allison Meredith Hill of Charleston on Nov 13, 2010, and Chip was married to Heather Lynn Peebles of Summerville on Sept 24, 2011. Ben is from Spartanburg, attended Spartanburg High School and was Eminent Archon of the chapter in 1999-2000. Kevin W Mims ‘98 Kevin is a founding equity partner of Luzuriaga Mims, LLP. He has been involved with the defense of numerous complex construction defect cases, representing general contractors, developers, subcontractors and owners. His practice also includes products liability, general civil litigation, and defending concurrent jurisdiction claims brought under the South Carolina Workers Compensation Act and the Longshore and Harbor workers' compensation Act. Kevin, a native of Greeleyville, is a 1998 cum laude graduate of the University of South Carolina and a 2001 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law. He enjoys a BV peer review rating from Martindale-Hubbell. Kevin is a member of the Charleston County Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the South Carolina Bar Association, including the Tort & Insurance Practice Section and the Construction Law Section. Weston Adams ‘60 Weston was a clerk in the law office of Louis W. Ingram, Columbia, SC, in 1963. From 1963 to 1966, he was Assistant Staff Judge Advocate, United States Air Force. He was a trust officer, South Carolina National Bank in Columbia, from 1966 to 1970. He served as associate counsel on the Select Committee on Crime, United States House of Representatives, in Washington, DC, 1970 - 1971. From 1971 to 1972, he was an associate attorney in the law office of Albert Watson in Columbia, SC, and from 1972 to 1974 was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. From 1972 to the present, he has been self-employed as an attorney in Columbia. Mr. Adams received his A.B. in 1960 from the University of South Carolina and his LL.B. in 1962 from the University of South Carolina Law School. He attended the University of South Carolina Graduate School in 1962 - 1963 and the American Institute of Banking in 1968. His foreign languages include reading comprehension in French and German. He was born September 16, 1938, in Columbia, SC. Mr. Adams is married to the former Elizabeth N. Nelson, and they have four children.
