OPEN DAYS at Mildura Senior College Friday 1st August 2014 • • Students from Chaffey SC and Merbein SC - 9:15am- 11:55am Students from Irymple SC, Trinity and Henderson College 12:35pm- 3.00pm Sunday 3rd August 2014 All prospective students, parents and the community - 11.00am - 2.00pm Any year 9 student considering studying a subject at MSC in 2015 should be encouraged to attend Collection of Preliminary subject selections • Week beginning Monday 27th October 2014 Important Dates Undertaken over a minimum of two years. Students must pass at least 16 units including at least 8 units at Year 12 level. Only compulsory subject is English Subjects at year 11 level are called Units 1 & 2. Subjects at year 12 level are called Units 3 & 4. Students do six subjects in year 11 and 5 subjects in year 12. Students can choose to undertake a Unit 3&4 subject while in year 11. If students require an ATAR for tertiary education they will be required to complete their VCE. Assessment in VCE units is by a mixture of School Assessed Coursework and Exams. VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education) Each Level can be completed within one year Can be achieved at either Foundation level, Intermediate Level or Senior level (Year 12 only) Students must pass at least 10 units. Students must pass subjects within each of these 5 strands Literacy (VCE English or Literacy) Numeracy (VCAL Numeracy or VCE Maths Strand) Personal Development Work Related Industry Specific (VET) Important that students are in the correct VET subject. Compulsory Work Placement and Camps. Assessment in VCAL units is by demonstrating competencies in a number of learning outcomes. VCE units will count towards getting a VCAL certificate VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) At Year 11 level there are two streams: FOUNDATION VCAL:this pathway is for students who require extra support in the classroom and is chosen by a student in consultation with MSC Wellbeing staff, Partnership School staff, the student and their parent/guardian. Generally a 1 Year program at MSC but some students go n to Intermediate level the following year. The program is a set all and supported by a classroom aide: • Literacy • Numeracy • Work Related • Personal Development • Food and Technology • VET Retail INTERMEDIATE VCAL: for students who are looking for a pathway that leads them to employment in the work place. Rather than reading novels and plays, students look at documents that are applicable to everyday living situations eg: contracts, instruction manuals, CV’s etc. To be successful in VCAL, students need to be motivated, able to work well independently and with other people, show initiative and be flexible. Change for 2015: • VCAL Work Related and Personal Development are combined VCAL Programs If students choose to undertaken more than one of the following Unit 1 Subjects within an area they will only obtain 1 credit as they are the same subject but we offer different streams Design Technology Information Technology Studio Arts General Mathematics Wood In Action Drawing Further Metals Applications Photography Specialist Textiles Subjects Alerts When helping a Student deciding to undertake a Unit 3 & 4 (Yr 12 Subject) in year 11, please consider the following; Good homework and study habits Are strong independent learners Would benefit from doing the Unit 1 & 2, some students who have a particular interest/skill area often enjoy doing the subject over the 2 Years. Are looking to boost their ATAR Score Have already completed Unit’s 1 & 2 Have good Literacy skills Doing a Year 12 subject in Yr11 does not mean reduction of load in year 12 Yr 11 students choosing a Unit 3&4 Subject EAL (English as an additional Language) Program for students who need additional Language support Separate Subject Selection Page Clontarf Student who are apart of the Clontarf Academy can choose Enrichment as a part of their program VCE or VCAL at Year 11 = VCAL Personal Development Intermediate Koori Girls Academy Student will be placed in the Koori Girls Academy Pathways class, can be noted on the subject selection sheet but not a subject.
