Africa Center for Strategic Studies
African Senior Leaders Gather for Seminar in Washington, D.C. - The Africa Center for Strategic Studies (ACSS) held
the Official Opening Ceremony for its Senior Leaders Seminar (SLS) on June 6 in Arlington, VA. The seminar (June
5-17) will provide a forum for senior-level military officers and civilian officials from Africa, the U.S., and Europe, as
well as representatives from international and regional organizations, to review and analyze the evolving African
security environment and to discuss strategies for addressing challenges and for enhancing Africa’s security. Sixty-five

Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies
CHDS Welcomes the 8th ICCT course - On June 6 the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies welcomed its 8th
Interagency Coordination and Combating Terrorism course (ICCT). With seventy three participants from nineteen
countries, this ICCT is one of the most diverse courses the Center has hosted, as the variety of professional
backgrounds represented includes civilian officials from a variety of ministries and government offices, police and
military officers, including several with special forces backgrounds, journalists, academics from civilian institutions
and war colleges, embassy personnel, and staffs of legislators and non-governmental organizations…more.
George C. Marshall Center for Security Studies
TV Story: Marshall Center Copyright Technician- As pictures, digital music and downloadable video are popular
additions to any military briefing, but rules on when and how those copyrighted items can be used are murky. At the
Marshall Center in Garmisch, one civilian keeps an eye out on the legalities of for her organization, as Jason Tudor

Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies
General Khalid Shameem Wynne of Pakistan receives the NESA Distinguished Alumni Award - General Khalid
Shameem Wynne is a four-star general in the Pakistan Army who is the current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
Committee, and thus the de-jure Supreme Commandant of the Pakistan Defense Forces. Before this appointment,
Wynne was serving as the Chief of General Staff (CGS) at General Headquarters since April 2010. He also served as
Commander of the Southern Command (formerly theXII Corps) in Quetta from 2007 till 2010 overseeing the Baloch
insurgency and the fallout of the war in the Tribal Areas.

NATO School
NSO teaching for the first time in Seattle - From the 16 until 20 May 2011, NATO School conducted a NATO Staff
Officer Orientation Course with a Mobile Education and Training Team at the Joint Base Lewis-McChord,
Washington State, U.S.A. It was the first time that NATO School has run such an event at a U.S. military base. Under
the direction of Colonel Tomislav Vibovec (HRV-A), Director of the Military Cooperation Department of the NATO
School and Lieutenant Colonel Roland Iffert (DEU-AF) as Course Director, 76 U.S. students (rank span from Staff
Sergeant up to Colonel) listened to several lectures and open discussions. The aim of this event was to provide US 1st
Corps students foundation knowledge on NATO structure, policies, operations, and current issues affecting the

Naval Education and Training Security Assistance Field Activity
Naval training’s international command changes leadership - Capt. Edmund “Junior” Turner turned over command of
NETSAFA to Capt. Douglas Heady during a ceremony onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola May 19. Rear Adm.
Joseph Kilkenny commander, Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) was guest speaker at the event. He
told the audience about Turner’s significant and lasting contributions to the training and education of U.S. and
international Sailors. “While Junior is leaving us today, we are not really losing his leadership. It will live on in the
thousands of military professionals spanning the globe who have trained and been developed into 21st century leaders
through the efforts of the NETSAFA team,”...more.

International Health Specialist
Subject Matter Expert for the ECOWAS nations medical planning and engagements
Capt (Dr.) Obuseh is an International Health Specialist assigned to the United States Air Force Africa
17 AF/SG, Office of the Command Surgeon, Ramstein AB, Germany. Capt Obuseh is the subject matter expert for the
ECOWAS nations medical planning and engagements. Capt Obuseh completed his doctorate in Public Health at the
University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in (2007). He also earned a Master in Public Health (MPH) in (2003)
Epidemiology and International Health from UAB and a M.S. in Human Nutrition from the University of Ibadan,
Nigeria…more.
