1 MUSIC NOTES Mendelssohn's third organ sonata in A Major was arranged in its final form in 1845 for publication as part of his Six Sonatas, but it is in fact a compilation of several earlier elements. The first movements begins and ends with a majestically confident march, which he composed as the processional for his sister Fanny's wedding. But the middle section consists of a fugue in A minor, based on a motive full of questioning and concern. While the hands explore this material, the pedal quotes Luther's paraphrase of Psalm 130, “From deepest woe I cry to thee”. This is hymn 151 in our hymnal, and in its three verses we can easily see connections both to Mendelssohn's sonata and the propers of today's Mass. We recognize in the Introit and Offertory the disappointment and sadness of those who have tried to live without a reliance on God's mercy and grace, but in the final verse of Luther's hymn, in Mendelssohn's return from deepest woe to the assurance of the opening theme, and in the Communion antiphon, we are remind ed that God's grace is eternally present in Word and Sacrament for those who trust God. Today's postlude, the second movement of the same sonata, is a tranquil meditation on this same journey, an assurance that the composition, and our lives, will really e nd in a major key. Jacquet of Mantua, the composer of today's communion motet, was born in Vitré, France, but spent his life working in Italy. In 1526 he became maestro di cappella at the cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Mantua. His employer Cardinal Ercole Gonzaga was fond of Jacquet, and the relationship was mutually beneficial; when Gonzaga became the president of the Council of Trent, and the most enthusiastic supporter of the Counter-Reformation, he was a forceful advocate for the music of his favorite composer. This motet lies right on the border of the styles of the 15 th and 16 th centuries: the voices imitate each other in a way that would be fully developed by Palestrina, but there are also sections of rich harmony when all the voices sing at once, in the style of Josquin, particularly in the Alleluia, expressing the sheer joy that the Eucharist can bring to us. 2 THE EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST SEPTEMBER 27, 2015 HIGH MASS AT 10:30 A.M. A————————————— men. 7 Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. O God, you declare your almighty power chiefly in showing mercy and pity: Grant us the fullness of your grace, that we, running to obtain your promises, may become partakers of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD First Reading—Numbers 11: 4-16, 10-16, 24-29 The rabble among them had a strong craving; and the Israelites also wept again, and said, "If only we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we used to eat in Egypt for nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic; but now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at." Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, all at the entrances of their tents. Then the LORD became very angry, and Moses was displeased. So Moses said to the LORD, “Why have you treated your servant so badly? Why have I not found favor in your sight, that you lay the burden of all this people on me? Did I conceive all this people? Did I give birth to th em, that you should say to me, ‘Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a sucking child,’ to the land that you promised on oath to their ancestors? Where am I to get meat to give to all this people? For they come weeping to me and say, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ I am not able to carry all this people alone, for they are too heavy for me. If this is the way you are going to treat me, put me to death at once--if I have found favor in your sight--and do not let me see my misery.” So the LORD said to Moses, “ Gather for me seventy of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; bring them to the tent of meeting, and have them take their place there with you. So Moses went out and told the people the words of the LORD ; and he gathered seventy elders of the people, and placed them all around the tent. Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders; and when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did not do so again. Two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the spirit rested on them; they were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. And a young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” And Joshua son of Nun, the assistant of Moses, one 8 of his chosen men, said, “My lord Moses, stop them!” But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the LORD's people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit on them!” Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. A brief period of silence is observed. Second Reading—James 4: 7-12, 13:5-6 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy into dejection. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. Do not speak evil against one another, brothers and sisters. Whoever speaks evil against another or judges another, speaks evil against the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is one lawgiver and judge who is able to save and to destroy. So who, then, are you to judge your neighbor? Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a town and spend a year there, doing business and making money.” Yet you do not even know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wishes, we will live and do this or that." As it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. Anyone, then, who knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, commits sin. Come now, you rich people, weep and wail for the miseries that are coming to you. Your riches have rotted, and your clothes are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will be evidence against you, and it will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure for the last days. Listen! The wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the righteous one, who does not resist you. 10 Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. A brief period of silence is observed. John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us. For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward. “ If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into th e sea. If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out; it is better 11 for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into hell, where their worm never dies, and the fire is never quenched. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into our care, so that, in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your creatures. When our disobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to the power of death. In your mercy you came to your help, so that in seeking you we might find you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you , and through the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation. Father, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your only son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, he lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfill your purpose he gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the whole creation new. And, that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him who died and rose for us, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift for those who believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring to fulfillment the sanctification of all. When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end; at supper with them he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ’s death and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and asce nsion to you right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you have give us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you. 16 BcrvzzyuvzzUv,vuycz uz8zovIUv,vzyvzuivci vxzuyvYvx,x Bcrvxyvzzuvyvuivxxyv xxyvxzRvc/ We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you, and we pray to you, Lord our God. Blessing & Dismissal Hymn 408 22 Organ— Andante Tranquillo Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-47) Announcements Special Note about Receiving the Blessed Sacrament At the end of the Eucharistic prayer when the celebrant says “The Gifts of God for the People of God,” all people are welcome to the High Altar. If for any reason one does not wish to receive Communion or is not baptized, he or she is most welcome to recei ve a blessing, indicated by crossing both arms over one’s chest. If you wish to discuss or receive baptism (initiation into the Christian faith), please speak to the priest. You may receive the bread directly onto your tongue or into folded hands, and th en after consuming the bread, may drink the wine from the chalice. If you keep the bread in your hands, it is our custom that a chalice bearer will dip it into the wine, and then place it on your tongue. The ministers will bring the Sacrament to those who tell an usher that they cannot easily climb the steps. Low-gluten bread is available. Tell an usher beforehand, or if necessary, tell the priest at the altar rail that you need to receive the low-gluten bread. If one does not wish to receive either the wine or bread, be assured that the traditional theology of the church is that Christ is fully present in both the consecrated bread and wine, thus not requiring both to be received to participate in the benefits of the sacrament. Please let Father Bates know if you are interested, since we need a minimum of six interested participants. No preparation is necess ary and weekly attendance is encouraged, but not necessary. RECEPTION FOR PHILIP FILLION I want to thank Philip Fillion, our Interim Director of Music, who has worked hard over the past two months to plan, play, and conduct our liturgical music. He especially made a valiant and successful effort in recruiting four completely new professional singers for the beginning of our choir season. W e will thank Philip and his wife Melody with a special reception on their last Sunday with us , October 25, 2015. S T A I N E D G L A S S R E S T OR A T I ON C A M P A I G N We would like to thank everyone who has already made a donation or pledge to the Stained Glass Restoration Campaign. Pledges over a longer period of time will also be welcome; please contact Jim Cramer or Fr. Bates. You may mail your checks in to the church or place them in an offering plate.
