1 Acting 101 (Session A or B) This is NOT a lecture on Classical Theatre: This is a hands-on workshop on the art of acting including improvisation, body movement, stage combat, cold reading, and stage make-up. We will be dabbling in these things during all 3 sessions. Animal Planet (Session B) In this session ½ of your group will visit the Greenville Humane Society where you will meet animals for adoption, see the clinic and grooming areas and be able to ask questions. The other ½ of the group will visit the Greenville Zoo for a closer look at the zoo animals’ daily life. On day 2 you will switch places, and on day 3 you will switch again. Animal Training (Session A) *Be sure to dress warm— you may get a little dirty.* You will visit a nationally known 8-acre dog training and pet resort known as Six Wags of Greer. Their mission is to provide a clean and safe environment so owners feel comfortable leaving their four legged family members. You will be able to see and participate in the many services from pet training to boarding and daycare. Apiculture (Beekeeping) (Session A or B) At some point humans began to attempt to domesticate wild bees in artificial hives made from hollow logs, wooden boxes, pottery vessels, and woven straw baskets or “skeps”. Honeybees were kept in Egypt long, long ago. On the walls of a sun temple from the 5th Dynasty, workers are depicted blowing smoke into hives as they are removing honeycombs. Join Clemson certified apiculturist, Tim Dover, to learn all about this fascinating hobby. Be careful, not about the bees, but because this “hobby” can become addictive!! Archery (Session A or B) Bow + Arrow =Cool. Do yourself a favor and read a history book; it’ll tell you the same thing. You’ll soon discover that this is a survivor skill you can boast about. We will infuse you with enough terminology and technique to make Katniss and Legolas look like wannabes. Embrace your inner warrior; join us during Arts Intersession and be revered by others. Book Making (Session A or B) Join Clemson art student Jena Heaton in the fine creation of a bound work of art. Learn how ordinary scrap or “found” materials can be turned in to a very personal, artistic expression. A journal all your own, inside and out! 2 Cake Pop Wars (Session A or B) Math teacher Ella Kate Williams is our resident Cake Pop Artist. Join her to bake, decorate (and eat) adorable creations. Chef for a Day (Session A or B) Cooking can be fun. This is a fun-filled class where you will learn how to prepare delectable foods and then you can enjoy eating them!! Clogging @ Dance Visions (Session B) Clogging is a type of folk dance in which the dancer's footwear is used musically by striking the heel, the toe, or both against a floor or each other to create audible percussive rhythms, usually to the downbeat with the heel keeping the rhythm. This session will be held at Dance Vision Studio in Greer. Creating Artists for Tomorrow (Session A or B)—*cost $20* CAT Studio At CAT studios in Greer, you will be exposed to the elements of art, master artists, different genres, a variety of art periods and high quality materials. You will be given the direction and encouragement needed to take chances, make a mess and deepen your love for visual arts. Learn about historical “Ugly Jugs” in this class as you create a clay masterpiece. CPR/First Aide (Session B)--*$3.00 per student* In case of an emergency, do you know what to do? If you ever babysit for a friend or family member, this is great class to take. In this class, you will learn from a certified instructor, who works with the City of Greer Fire Department, how to administer CPR and First Aide in all types of emergency situations. At the end of the course, you will receive your CPR certification from the American Heart Association. Crochet Away (Session B only) Crocheting is the first cousin to knitting and is another great way to relax and be productive at the same time. You will learn various crochet stitches to create a beautiful piece of attire. Drawing (Charcoal Portrait) (Session A or B) You will be exposed to drawing with charcoal and conte crayons. There will be two drawings. 1) gestural studies with conte/charcoal and 2) a form study using white and black charcoal pencils on gray paper. Fitness Frenzy (Session A or B) Are you tired? Lacking energy? Do you want to know the "secrets" to help get you fit? Then come to Xanderman's Fitness Frenzy to learn the techniques and skills of various aspects of fitness including: 3 resistance training, cardiovascular health, stretching, and nutrition. Be prepared to get your sweat on, make some nutritious snacks, and maybe even visit a gym. For the Love of Books! (Session A only) Are you one of those people who can’t put a book down once you pick it up? Would you enjoy being in the company of others just like you, and be able (and encouraged) to delve into the wonderful world of reading…for hours?? Curl up with your favorite book, some hot chocolate or tea, a comfy blanket and read away! Form/Function and Art (all day) There is a $45 fee for this class payable at sign ups. (Off Campus) Dress Warm (the pottery wheel is in a garage outside) Also be prepared to get dirty while working with the clay. You will be given time to explore the pottery wheel, to create and glaze a piece of ceramic work. You will learn about form and function pertaining to the 3 dimensional world of clay. There are endless opportunities with textures and forms when it comes to creating art with clay. You will learn about kiln and firings work and some information about glazes and the process of glazing, as well as, how to surface your piece by using clay tools and attaching clay to clay. You will also have step by step instructions and will paint a reproduction of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night on 16 x 20 canvas. Fundamentals of Computer Programming (Session A or B) You will be introduced to programming in the Computer language. In this class, you will learn about the variables, functions, and syntax necessary to create your very own computer program! This class offers a unique opportunity to learn about the world of programming. Knights of Sienna: Fencing (Session A or B) Cost $10 Engarde! This exciting combat course is not for the faint of heart. Come prepared to take a couple blunt blows as you go on the attack, seeking to outmaneuver your opponent with a series of lunges and parries. Make sure to wear comfortable athletic wear and bring plenty of water to hydrated! See you there. Introduction to Piano (Session A) Have you ever said, “I wish I could play the piano”? Here’s your chance. This class is for you. Stephanie Horne of Noteability Studio will be your patient instructor. This class is for students with no previous music experience. Jazz @ Dance Visions (Session A) Jazz was a big hit in the early 50's and it is still a well-loved style of dance all over the world. This session will be held at Dance Visions in Greer. 4 Jazz Funk Dance Class (Session B) Join GMC’s senior, Monica Evans as you break it down. Jazz Funk is a dance style of the body and mind. It can be lyrical in the sense of emotional interpretation. At times you may gracefully sideways shuffle on a beat and then boom!!! Emerging in the 1980’s this dance form was brought about by the popularization and commercial influence of the Hip Hop dance. Knights of Sienna: Fencing (Session A or B) Cost $10 Engarde! Knitting is a very relaxing hobby. In this class you will learn the basics of knitting and will create something you will be able to take home. Layered Drawing: (Session A or Session B) Returning Clemson University art student Travis Wood will teach students how to use a variety of mediums to create a unique piece of art work. Students who took this class last year will enjoy it even more this year as you will experience a different, deeper level of instruction. Lindy Hop Class The Lindy Hop is an American dance that evolved in Harlem, New York City in the 1920s and 1930s and originally evolved with the jazz music of that time. Lindy was a fusion of many dances that preceded it or were popular during its development but is mainly based on jazz, tap, breakaway and Charleston. It is frequently described as a jazz dance and is a member of the swing dance family. Modeling Methods in Drawing (Session A or B) Art Education Student from Greenville Technical College will be showing you how to achieve realism in drawing by introducing a variety of line types and using a full range of values. You will also experience making incorporated multimedia decisions allowing you to incorporate color into your finished work. On your mark, Get set, Let’s go……. (Session A or B) Join our very own Coach Crenshaw in a time of Team Sports. Team Sports provide important lessons on personal values. "When you play a team sport you learn that it doesn't just come down to the best player”. Team Sports comes down to working as a team, accepting decisions and understanding that people have different abilities." 5 Origami (Session A or B) This class offers an understanding of traditional origami. Origami is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, from ori meaning “folding”, and kami meaning “paper”. The goal of this art is to transform a flat sheet of material into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques. Photography (Session A or B) Returning artist Matt Carter from Fuzzy Bison Studios, NC will return again this year to demonstrate how photography works on film. Polymer Clay Jewelry (Session A only) You will learn a variety of techniques using Polymer Clay (plastic material that permanently hardens after baking, and you will use these techniques to create your own beads. Beads will be incorporated into your own finished jewelry. *Using safe handling practices with sharp blades required.* Polymer Clay Keepsake Box (Session B only) You will use polymer clay to make a small box with a lid, perfect size for holding rings or other treasures. You will learn techniques and choose how to design and decorate your own box. *Using safe handling practices with sharp blades required.* Rubik’s and Games (Session A or B) Do you have the expertise and determination it takes? ......Come join the fun and learn how to solve the Rubik’s Cube. For those that become too frustrated or just need to take a break, there will be competitive board game sessions as well. Say Yes to the Dress (Session A or B) This class is designed to assist you in developing knowledge and skills in planning a wedding, for yourself or as a career wedding planner. Each student will plan a mock wedding for themselves by creating their own wedding inspiration binder to keep. Come plan a dream wedding! Scrapbooking (Session A or B) You will have the chance to learn the basic steps behind creating an attractive scrapbook allowing you to hold onto your fun events, relationships and memories, forever. Stained Glass Mosaics (Session A or B) LEB Glass Studio will be here once again to teach how to create beautiful pieces of glass art. Come explore the dance between light and shadow, shape and texture, brilliant color and muted tones through the language of mosaics. 6 Still Life with Apples-Acrylic on Canvas (Session A or B) Come explore working on a still life painting using acrylic paint on a 16 x 20 canvas. We will cover different techniques, types of brushwork and some color theory. Trailbuilding and Wilderness Skills (Both A and B sessions-students must bring lunch/snack) On the 1st day you will participate in a wilderness skills hike. You will get to learn about leaving no trace, building shelters and fires and wild edibles. On the 2nd day and 3rd day you will actually work on a trail and learn about trail building. Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Solo? (Session A or Session B) Popular music improvisation for all instruments (even voice!) "With a few simple scales and chords, anyone who plays an instrument or sings can begin a journey into the world of improvisatory music making--beginner to advanced, any instrument or voice type." Wonderful World of Watercolor This is NOT the usual elementary/middle school painting class using pan Watercolor sets. We’ll be using professional grade tube watercolor to explore a variety of techniques. We will paint landscapes, portraits and still life paintings. Get ready to be impressed by what you can do with the right tools and materials, not to mention a few amazing tricks. Yoga If you think of people in seemingly impossible and weirdly twisted poses when you think of "Yoga", then you may have an inkling of what yoga is, just an inkling that's it. Yoga is much more than those poses. Yoga has never been alien to us. It's a way of our life. We have been doing it since we were a baby! Whether it is the Cat Stretch that strengthens the spine or the Wind-Relieving pose that boosts digestion, you will always see kids do some form of yoga throughout the day. Yoga works for everyone from people engaged in desk jobs to professional cyclists to runners to people looking for weight loss to housewives to students. This session mostly explains how yoga can improve the quality of life for everyone who adopts this practice.
