Call for 2014 Regional Conference Presentation Proposals
March 13 – 15 Ivy Tech Community College in Marion, Indiana
Reducing Marginalization; Increasing Inclusion
Human Services was developed in response to the increased needs of individuals, families and
communities that resulted from deinstitutionalization, the Civil Rights movement, and the War on
Poverty. Community integration, empowerment, and social and economic justice continue to be at
the core of our mission and outreach to these marginalized groups are no exception with the
following groups among those assisted by human services professionals: homeless; wounded
warriors; older adults; offenders; LGBTQI; immigrants and refugees; children and families in the
protective services system; persons with disabilities; victims and survivors of traumatic events; and
persons with HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, substance dependence, and other long-term
conditions. Often, these individuals are targets of anger, resentment, fear, ridicule and apathy.
Human service practitioners recognize the inherent worth of these marginalized individuals, and
pursue collaborative solutions to improve well-being and quality of life. Join us for conversations
about creative and innovative approaches to greater inclusion of those who live in the margins.
