None, although keyboarding skills are valuable.
Catalog Description
This course is an introduction to the operational organization of the computer and
provides an orientation to the terminology and use of computers in processing data. This
course will introduce current computer applications and logic. It will serve as the first
course to be taken by any computer science major or may satisfy a computer science
requirement for another discipline.

This is a complete Registration Code granting access to the e-books you will be using
for this class.
You can also purchase this code when you set up to work in SIMnet. There is a link
to purchase a code—it should cost less at the site
The e-books do not have to be used separately in the learning module.
o In other words you don’t have to have a separate reading device.
o You read material that is being introduced and then complete a small exercise within
that book.
When you are finished you will then take a pre-test on the objectives covered and proceed
from there for assignments.

Transferability
Students who are interested in transferring TCC credits to a four-year institution should consult
the West Campus Counseling office, I-104, Ext. 8176 to determine transferability.
Attendance
 Attendance is determined by login and submission of assignments
 Bi-weekly login and completion of assignments is a requirement of this class.
 There is no reason to not complete work during week one because you will have
access to the class in SimNet until your can obtain the code for the course through
financial aid.
 Students missing two module deadlines in a row may be withdrawn from the course
administratively; if not withdrawn personally
o At the end of term, if you have not submitted 30% of the assigned points, you
will receive an administrative withdrawal from the course.
 Go to a TCC Business computer lab to complete your work if you can’t use you own
machine.

NOTE: If you fail to complete 30% of the work in this class (300 points) you will receive an
administrative withdrawal (AW), not an “F.” The last day of participation will be reported when
submitting the withdrawal. Both Administrative Withdrawals and “Fs” will affect financial aid.
1. There are 1,000 points possible for this class
2. If you complete enough work to earn 301-594 points, you will receive an F.
3. Administrative Withdrawals and F’s have the same effect on financial aid.
4. W’s and AW’s will show up on your transcript, but do not affect your GPA, but an
“F” does.
5. It is your responsibility to withdraw by the withdrawal date if you do not intend to
finish the class.
6. To receive an incomplete (I) at the end of term to make up work, you must have a
passing grade. You must have been completing work and submitting assignments
regularly to be considered for an incomplete.
7. You should withdraw or ask for administrative withdrawal if an emergency occurs.
Class Withdrawal
The following statement is provided by TCC for all students attending and directly can affect
future funding if you are attending on financial aid of any kind. If you are not attending on
financial aid you will not be affected. However, if you are not using financial aid to attend, you
may want to read it for future reference.
TCC Financial Aid Policy Statement effective fall 2011 classes
 “We (TCC) wanted to let you know that the Federal Financial Rules and
Regulations have changed. Beginning now, if you receive any type of federal
financial aid (Title IV aid) such as student loans, veterans benefits, grants,
scholarships or any other type of federal financial aid, you could be affected.
 For the fall 2011 semester and beyond, if you receive any type of Federal Financial
Aid (grant or loan) and you withdraw from or fail a class, you may lose your funding.
 TCC is required to run a calculation and determine if we must return some or all of
your financial aid funds to the Department of Education. This often leaves a student
with a balance owed to TCC that must be repaid.

For this reason, it is crucial that all students who receive any type of financial aid visit
with both an academic advisor (Your teacher) and a financial aid advisor before
withdrawing from a class or if they feel they are not doing well in a class.

Class Information
 You will be completing the majority of your work through SimNet this semester.
Once you have gone through the steps to set up SimNet, you will have the ability to
set it to launch from Blackboard. You will have some assignments and discussions
completed or submitted through Blackboard. Discussion Boards will be completed
directly in Blackboard
 This is an on-line class, if you have not taken an on-line class before; you need to
prepare yourself for the work involved by allotting enough time.
o Put aside a minimum of about 3-6 hours each week for this class. Don’t try to
do all of the assignments in a module on the day it is due.
o You need to be a self-starter and disciplined in your learning approach.
 This class involves learning new material and then completion of Homework
assignments; it does require a time commitment.
 In all classes you should plan for twice the number of hours of the class for work.
o Set aside approximately 2-3 hours to complete the chapter’s learning exercises
o Set aside another 3-4 hours to complete the Homework Assignments
o Stay with due dates; it is very easy to get behind; you may submit an
assignment up to one week after the due date for reduced points.
o Just a pointer here: Speak with or E-mail your instructor with questions
when you don’t understand a concept.

Course Objectives
1. Students will review to use the Windows Operating system to manage files and basic
maintenance of the operating systems
2. Students will use Word to create and edit documents of varying levels of complexity from basic
text entry to changes in layout and organization.
3. Students will use Word to learn to use Headers, footers and insert and format references
4. Students will use Word to learn to insert and format graphics Tab Stops and Text Boxes and
Shapes.
5. Students will learn to create and modify a table
6. Students will learn to create and format columns and apply special character and paragraph
formatting
7. Students will learn to create mailing labels using Mail Merge and to insert SmartArt Graphics
8. Students will use Excel to create, save and navigate a Workbook and to enter and edit data in a
worksheet
9. Students will learn to construct and copy formulas and use functions
10. Students will learn to format data, cells and worksheets and to create a chart from data.
11. Students will learn to construct formulas for mathematical operations
12. Students will learn to work with multiple worksheets in a Workbook
13. Students will learn to design a worksheet for What-If Analysis which will use more complex
formula creations
14. Students will learn to use statistical functions in Excel and freeze panes and create a Table. They
will also learn to format and print a large worksheet.
15. Students will learn to use Access to create a database and prepare the objects that appear in them.
a. For example the creation of Reports, Forms and tables
16. Students will learn to create Table Relationships and sort records
17. Students will learn to ask a question of a table (Query creation)
18. Students will learn to create tables importing outside sources
19. Students will learn to use a calculated Field in a Query
20. Students will learn to use PowerPoint to create and edit a Presentation
21. Students will learn how to insert objects like pictures, drawing objects and SmartArt into a
presentation
22. Students will learn how to Format Slide Elements and apply slide transition.
23. Students will learn to customize Slide Backgrounds and Themes and to animate a slide show
24. Students will learn to Create and Modify tables and charts
25. Students will learn to insert video and sound to a presentation
Software
This class requires that you use a full install of Office 2013.

It is available for free download and is available through Blackboard Organizations
tab; SimPaths, projects and exams for office applications will be using SimNet and
the majority of your work is graded in that program.

Computer Use Policy
If you do not have a home computer, your assignments may be completed on any TCC campus.
TCC labs are open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Please check the
campus closest to you for their computer lab policy.
Access to computing resources is a privilege granted to all TCC faculty, staff and students. Use
of TCC computing resources is limited to purposes related to the College’s mission of education
research, and community services. Student use of technology is governed by the Computer
Services Acceptable Use Statements/Standards found in the TCC Student Code of Conduct Policy
Handbook. These handbooks may be obtained by contacting any Student Activities or Dean of
Student Services office.
