Minutes of the February 20, 2014, UPCC Meeting

The meeting was called to order at 12:32 p.m.

Members present: Stan Crowder (proxy for Linda Treiber and Gail Scott), Doug Bell, Liza

Chair Jennifer Wade-Berg asked for a motion to approve the February 6, 2014, UPCC minutes.

Stan Crowder made the motion and it was seconded and subsequently approved. The minutes were adopted.

Unfinished business

Dr. Andrew Pieper from the Department of Political Science and International Affairs explained that the changes to the four new POLS course proposals presented at the February 6 meeting,

POLS 3328, 4280, 4428, and 4429, had been made, but that language regarding the Library would be added. Dr. Wade-Berg asked for a motion from the floor to approve the four proposals on second reading.

Andrew Green made the motion; Penny Verhoeven seconded, and the motion was approved.

Dr. Wade-Berg then called for a motion to approve the motion to approve the “Change in

Program” proposal for the B.S. in Political Science. Stan Crowder made the motion and Andrew

Green approved.

The proposals submitted by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Department of Exercise Science and Sport Management were tabled for a future meeting.

Carolyn Carlson from the Department of Communication presented the department’s “Change in

Program,” “Change in Course,” and “New Course” proposals for second reading. Dr. Wade-

Berg asked first for a motion to approve the “Change in Course” and “New Course” proposals;

Penny Verhoeven made the motion and Andrew Green seconded. The motion was approved.

Dr. Wade-Berg then requested a motion to approve all “Changes in Program” for the B.S. in

Communication. Andrew Green made the motion, and Stan Crowder seconded. The motion was approved.

Dr. Wade-Berg subsequently asked for a motion to approve the “Change in Program” proposal for the Minor in Crisis Preparedness. Doug Bell made the motion, and Andrew Green seconded it. The motion was approved.

The discussion moved to the Department of Foreign Languages proposals. Dr. Federica Santini addressed the “Change in Program” proposals for the minors in French, German, Italian, and

Spanish for second reading and the “New Course” proposals for ITAL 4404 and 4499. Dr.

Wade-Berg asked first for a motion to approve the two new courses. Andrew Green made the motion, Becky Shabo seconded it, and the motion was approved. She then requested a motion to approve the “Change in Program” proposals. Andrew Green made the motion, Stan Crowder seconded it, and the motion was approved.

Becky Shabo presented three “New Course” proposals for NURS 4421, 4431, and 4433 for second reading. Dr. Wade-Berg called for a motion. Andrew Green, made the motion, Doug Bell seconded it, and the motion was approved.

Professor Bruce Thomas presented the “Change in Course” proposal for MATH 1107, explaining that suggested revisions had been made. Dr. Wade-Berg called for a motion to approve the proposal. Becky Shabo made the motion, Jessica Stephenson seconded it, and the motion was approved.

Professor Lauren Moran presented the “New Course” proposal for ISD 4490 for second reading. explaining that suggested changes had been made. Jessica Stephenson made the motion, Andrew

Green seconded it, and the motion was approved.

Dr. Jessica Stephenson presented the “Change in Program” and “Change in Course” proposals for the School of Art and Design for second reading. explaining that the requested change made in capstone course (regarding the number of tutorials students must attend in the “Attendance

Policy” section) had been addressed. Dr. Wade-Berg requested a motion to address the “Change in Course” proposals. Andrew Green made the motion, Doug Bell seconded it, and the motion was approved.

The Chair then called for a motion to approve the “Change in Program” proposal for the Minor in Art History. Doug Bell made the motion, Becky Shabo seconded it, and the motion was approved.

Dr. Deborah Smith presented the “Change in Program” proposal for the Certificate in Leadership

Studies for second reading. Dr. Wade-Berg called for a motion to approve the proposal. Stan

Crowder made the motion; Andrew Green seconded it; and the motion was approved.

Dr. Seneca Vaught presented the “New Course” proposal for HIST 3378, the “History of

Technology,” for second reading, but Dr. Wade-Berge asked that this reading be pushed to the next meeting so that the requested edits for the course could be posted.

New Business

The first reading a “New Course” proposal for STAT 4030, “Programming in R,” was pushed to the next meeting.

Dr. Janeen Anderson presented a series of “Change in Course” proposals submitted by the

WellStar School of Nursing, explaining that these changes resulted from a need to “clean up” the nursing courses in the catalog—e.g., NURS 3301, which had been discontinued but was still listed.

Dr. Wade-Berg suggested that the discontinuance of a course in “Nutrition” be explained in a separate proposal and that NURS 4414 be added as a co-req. for NURS 4412. She then requested a motion to approve the “Change in Course” proposals from Nursing, with the suggested changes, on first reading. Andrew Green made the motion, and Ryan Delaney seconded it. The motion was approved. She then asked for a motion to approve the discontinuance of NURS

4420. Stan Crowder made the motion, Doug Bell seconded it, and the motion was approved.

Dr. Neysa Figueroa then presented the “New Course” proposal for ASIA 4422, “Archaeology of

Asia,” for first reading. Dr. Wade-Berg suggested the following revisions:

Under Section II, B o The prerequisite listed is for ASIA 3001 but the explanation for question 1 refers to ASIA 3100 –a typo that needs to be corrected.

Signature Page o Proposed Effective Date should be Fall 2014

Syllabus o State a clear attendance policy o Although not required, consider inclusion of a statement regarding disabled student support and where students can go to seek a classroom accommodation

It was also recommended that ASIA 4422 be submitted as a cross-listed course with ANTH 4322 on in a separate proposal. The first reading for the course was pushed to the next meeting.

Dr. Gail Markle presented a “New Course” proposal for SOCI 3350, “

Intersections of Race, Class and Gender,” for first reading. Dr. Wade-Berg requested the following revisions:

Under Section II, B o SOCI 2201 is listed as the prerequisite but SOCI 3350 is listed for desired sequence along with SOCI 2201—a typo needing correction.

Under Section III, B

o The Political Science Department in the CHSS College is seeking approval for their course

POLS 4425: Critical Theories of Race, Gender, and Difference as a new course for Fall 2014. Speak to the difference between that course and your proposed course in this section.

Syllabus o Clarify course goal from “understand” to an active learning outcome term (See

Bloom’s taxonomy)

She recommended that Dr. Markle ask her department to put a response to the course duplication issue in the proposal and consider for future reference what courses might be cross-listed. She then asked for a motion to approve the proposal, with edits, on first reading. Jessica Stephenson made the motion, Doug Bell seconded it, and the motion was approved.

Dr. Sheb True presented the “Change in Program” proposal for the BBA in International

Business and the “New Course” proposal for BUSA 3500, “Culture and International Business,” for first reading.

Dr. Wade-Berg asked for a motion to approve the new course on first reading. Andrew Green made the motion, Penny Verhoeven seconded it, and the proposal was approved for second reading. At Dr. Wade-Berg’s suggestion, Andrew Green then made a motion to approve the

“Change in Program” proposal on first reading; Penny Verhoeven seconded, and the motion was approved.

Dr. Ben Wadsworth presented the “Change in Program” proposal for the B.A. in Music and

“Change in Course” proposal for MUSI 4421. Dr. Wade-Berg suggested that the effective date for the changes be altered to Fall 2104. She requested a motion to approve the “Change in

Course” proposal for second reading; Penny Verhoeven made the motion, Ryan Delaney seconded it, and the motion was approved.

The discussion moved to the “Change in Course” and “New Course” proposals for AADS. Dr.

Wade-Berg suggested the following revisions:

AADS 3780 – New Course o Section II: Justification for Course, Section B – Prerequisites

Complete question 2 – since prereqs. are required list the order instead of

N/A

 In the written justification it was explained that students in AADS 1102 expressed an interest in continuing their studies further and this course was the answer and that AADS 1102 is preferable before this course … yet the AADS 1102 is not a prereq. Would it be important to have students complete AADS 1102 first? o Section IV: Resources and Funding Required

John C. Smith added that the term “unlimited” should be changed to "repeatable" in reference to number of opportunities a student could retake a course.

At Dr. Wade-Berg’s suggestion, Andrew Green made two successive motions to approve the proposals for second reading and Ryan Delaney seconded both. The motions were approved.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:47 p.m.
