Career Report Assignment Principles of Health Science 2015-16
Written Report
 You will research and submit a report on five occupations.
 You must use the career report forms provided. Each occupation report must be on a
separate page, and be no more than one page long. The report form template is available
on Ms. Robin’s web site
 Reports must be neat and legible.
o Handwritten reports must be completed on the report form
o Typed reports must include all sections used on the report form
o Lists and bullet points are acceptable. Complete sentences are not required.
 Reliable and current sources are required for each career.
o The DHO textbook is not current, and will not be accepted as a source.
o Wikipedia will not be accepted as a source
 Sources must be cited. Reports without citations will receive a grade of zero.
o The “suggested citation” format for Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) may
be used.
o MLA format for sources other than OOH should be used, including the URL.
 Reports are due on Tuesday, March 8 at the beginning of class.
 You must research careers from the following categories:
o One type of physician (MD or DO) specialist
o One type of nurse (LVN, RN, advanced practice nurse (NP, CRNA, CNM,
clinical specialist)
o Two additional health careers, other than MD, DO, or nurse
 One other careers of your choice. You may choose any career, including a medical
specialist or nurse. It does not have to be a health career.
 The written career reports count as a test grade.
Class Presentation
 You will do oral reports on at least 2 of the careers that you have researched.
 The teacher will select the careers that you present.
 You may refer to your written reports or other notes for your oral presentations.
 The oral reports will count as a daily grade.
 You must submit your written reports on time in order to have the opportunity to
do your class presentation. If your written reports are late, you will receive a grade
of zero for the class presentation.

10 percent will be deducted from the grade for each day that the assignment is overdue.

Evaluation: Career Research Oral Report Daily Grade Rubric
 0-50 points Orally communicates the main idea logically and effectively, holds
audience attention, maintains eye contact
 0-25 points Speaks clearly, at an appropriate volume
 0-25 points Professional appearance is demonstrated by adherence to MHS dress code,
maintaining good posture, and refraining from chewing gum during presentation
 Audience participation counts! 10 points will be deducted each time a students is
inattentive or rude while listening to the reports of other students. Reading, sleeping,
talking, playing with jewelry or hair, and other behaviors will result in loss of points.

 Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) This is the preferred source!
o Written by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, this is the most comprehensive
and reliable source of information for most careers.
o Google “OOH”, it will be the first site listed. The URL is http://www.bls.gov/ooh/
 Health Opportunities in Texas
o A reliable website developed through a grant from a Texas state agency
o Google “Texas hot jobs”, or use the URL http://www.texashotjobs.org/
 Texas Reality Check
o An interactive web site that will help you determine how much money you will
need to earn in order to achieve your goals.
o Contains accurate information from the Texas Workforce Commission.
o Google “Texas reality check” or use the URL http://www.texasrealitycheck.com/
 Careers in Medicine Specialty Pages
o This site provides descriptions of most medical specialties, and the length of
residency required after graduation from medical school.
o This site by the Association of American Medical Colleges requires a subscription
for full information about current salary information. You will need to use OOH
to get general information about salary for physicians and surgeons.
o The best way to find this site is to search for “medical specialties” in Google, or
use the URL https://www.aamc.org/cim/specialty/list/us/
 Discovernursing.com
o This reliable site contains information about nursing careers and specialties.
o Google “discover nursing” or use the URL http://www.discovernursing.com/
