Causes of the Civil War
States Rights The states wanted to chose whether or not they were
free states or slave states, and not the government telling them.
Sectionalism Representatives were making decisions based on only
what their region needs (South, North, East ,West) rather than the whole
country.
Tariff The tariff used tax on imports from Europe which helped the north
because most of the nations factories were located there. However, it
didn’t help the south because south had mostly agriculture.

SLAVERY
Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote this book. It made the North realize
how bad the African Americans were being treated that were in the South.
Dred Scott,
he was a slave and he asked the court for his freedom, and the court said no.
Eventually he went to supreme court but they said he didn’t have any American rights. Many
people hoped Dred Scotts decision would make things better, but it made slavery worse.
Fugitive Slave Law, Was passed to provide the return of escaped slaves. And to
confirm that they were owned.

4. Conquer the Confederates
Capital
They divided and conquered the south
by gaining control of the Mississippi
River, which separated Texas from the
rest of the South, continuing on, after
many battles, to capture Richmond,
which was the Capital of the
Confederacy.

Strategies of the Confederates
The war in the South* The confederates (or South) knew the
land and could maneuver faster, hide better, could surprise attack, and
surround smaller groups.
Inspiration* The confederates looked for inspiration to the heroes of
1776 who had triumphed over greater odds than southerners faced in
1881.
Concentrating Masses Against Fraction* First to maneuver
to gain advantage of ground or numbers. They tried to make sure they
had the largest number of soldiers on the battlefields. (Power in
Numbers)

Strategies of the Confederates
MAIN STRATAGIES OF THE SOUTH*
o Whip as many Yankees as they could. This got the men motivated
and ready to fight.
o To mostly fight in the South This allowed them to maneuver trough
the trees more easily. They thought that it would be better for them but
instead they ended up getting deprived of their food and supplies.
oTheir Offensive-Defensive Strategy
This consisted of defending the
Confederate homeland by using interior lines of communication (a Jominian but
also common-sense concept) to concentrate dispersed forces against an invading
army and, if opportunity offered, to go over to the offensive, even to the extent of
invading the North.

Northern Issues of the Civil War
President of the United States in the civil war
When Abe was sworn into office he said “A house divided
against itself cannot stand”. Abe decided that going to
war would be the only way to persevere the union.
In the north they were against
slavery. They thought a person no
matter what color should be treated
the same. On September 22,1862
the north warned that if they didn’t
surrender by c 1,1863 all their
slaves would be freed. African
American men rushed to enlist in
May of 1863. The department
established the Bureau of Colored
troops. Black soldiers received $7
per month, plus a $3 clothing
allowance.

Soldier Life in the Civil War
Camps were packed with tents housing 5
or 6 men. Log cabins were used in winter
months to provide insulation from the
cold. The Union also used log cabins in
the winter months. Chimneys would be
built for a fire to keep warm.
