Introduction
Dr. Calabrese came to us with a vision a legacy network that would be available to all
technology students to go and look and get an idea of what a rack would like with things in it as
well as looking at old technology that is not used anymore but without it we would not be where
we are today.
We set up the racks as thought they would be being used by a company with all of the lighter
things on the top and the heaver things on the bottom. This documents perpus is twofold one is to
tell you what this is but the other is to be a guide line for how to do documentation for a network
in this case the network is not operational but we are still able to make documentation that makes
sense for this kind of network using different tools such as Microsoft Visio as well as Microsoft
word.

3Com Super Stack II Hub 10 24-Port
The SuperStack II Hub 10 24 Port TP (3C16671A) has 24 dedicated twisted pair ports on the
front panel and an AUI port on the rear panel. The rear panel also has a slot for a 3Com
Transceiver Module or Bridge MicroModule; if fitted the Module will operate in addition to the
AUI port. A range of different media Transceiver Modules is available from 3Com (see"Products
and Bulletin Boards").
The Hub 10 24 Port TP can be stand-alone or linked with other Hub 10, LinkBuilder FMS II,
FMS, 10BT or 10BTi units to form a stack of units of different media. Each stack is the
equivalent to a single IEEE 802.3 repeater, so stacking units gives you the benefit of a higher
port count. The Hub 10 24 Port TP is suited for office use where it can be wall-mounted, rackmounted, or free standing. Alternatively, the unit can be rack-mounted in a wiring closet or
equipment room. A mounting kit is supplied.
The Hub 10 24 Port TP can be powered either from the AC mains supply, or through an optional
3Com Redundant Power System (3C565047) to provide a more reliable supply. Contact your
supplier for details.
Management:
A SuperStack II Hub 10 Management Module (3C16630A) or Advanced RMON Module
(3C16632) can be fitted to the Hub 10 24 Port TP to provide full SNMP management, including
statistics, resilient links and security features. Only one Management Module or Advanced
RMON Module is required for each stack. Refer to the guides accompanying the module for
details on how to manage a Hub 10 unit or stack. Resilience and Security Hub 10 Management
Module (3C16630A) and Hub 10 Advanced RMON Module (3C16632) offer resilience and
security features. Up to 16 resilient link pairs can be configured via management software.
Network Connections:
You can connect the Hub 10 24 Port TP to any Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) fitted with a
10Base-T network adapter or a 10Base-T transceiver. Connect one end of the twisted pair cable
to the RJ45 port on the unit and the other end to the RJ45 port on your network adapter or
transceiver. You can attach up to 24 twisted pair segments to the front of the unit. The Hub 10 24
Port TP can use both shielded 150ohm, and unshielded or shielded 100ohm twisted pair cables.
To remain within 802.3 10Base-T rules the maximum length of cable between the unit and any
DTE should not be greater than 100m (110 yards). Consult your supplier's technical support
department if you need to use twisted pair cables over greater distances.
You can connect any 802.3 transceiver to the unit using an AUI cable connected to the AUI port
on the rear panel. Also, you can fit one of the 3Com Transceiver Modules or a Bridge
MicroModule into the slot on the rear panel (see"Products and Bulletin Boards").
7
You can connect the Hub 10 24 Port TP to any other 10Base-T repeater using port 24, to form an
inter-repeater link. You must switch port 24 to MDI to bypass the internal cross-over normally
implemented by 10Base-T unit ports: see "MDI Switch".

Hayes Smart Modem 2400
Overview
Hayes Microcomputer Products was a U.S.-based manufacturer of modems. They are particularly well
known for their Smart modem, which is introduced the ability to control the modem through commands
sent in the data stream itself. The "smart modem" approach dramatically simplified operation, making
modems a practical device for a much wider audience. Today almost all modems still use a variant of the
Hayes command set introduced in the Smart modem.
Product Features
Error-Control and Data Compression
9600 bps throughput with V.42 data compression

APC AP9225 Master Switch Plus
Overview
To detect internal problems and recover from unanticipated inputs, the unit
uses internal, system-wide watchdog mechanisms. When it reboots itself to
recover from an internal problem, a System: Warmstart event is recorded in
the event log.
Features of Master Switch Plus
MasterSwitch Plus allows you to individually control power to connected
equipment and to gracefully shut down or restart up to eight connected
servers running different operating systems. In order to manage your
system effectively and efficiently, MasterSwitch Plus has these additional
features:
• Four password-protected accounts that ensure restricted access to
system-, device-, read-only- and outlet-level services.
• Automatic shut-down of connected servers attached to an APC UPS
when the UPS enters an on-battery state and removes power from
connected equipment after the server confirms shutdown.
• Shuts down servers before cycling power to the connected equipment
(Graceful Reboot).
• Control of eight power outlets (per unit) for complete and flexible
management of connected equipment.
• Web, control console, or SNMP management interfaces.
• Configure the sequence in which outlets receive power upon start-up.
• Connects serially to up to three expansion units (AP9225EXP),
providing control of 32 connected devices with one IP address.
• Provides a selection of security protocols for authentication and
encryption.
• Event log accessible by FTP, SCP, Telnet, serial connect

3Com Super Ethernet Power Source
The 3Com® Ethernet power sources (EPS) let companies with NBX® telephones or 3Com
wireless access points connect and power these devices from a single location using their LAN
cabling. With the EPS located in a secure wiring closet or other central location, you can easily
access and manage the distribution of power to devices throughout your organization. EPS
eliminates the need for a local power outlet and power cable for each device. One wire provides
both 10/100BASE-T connectivity and power, freeing power outlets for other electronic
equipment.
