Global Issues
Use this PowerPoint in conjunction
with your exercise book to help
you revise.
You need to know:
 How cost of living has changed over the last 50 years
 Credit crunch and its impacts on housing
 How industrialisation in China has impacted China and
the UK
 Food miles and their impact on the environment
 How migration could impact job prospects in the UK
 Globalisation: what it is and how you are involved
 Carbon footprints
 Causes, effects and solutions to global warming
 Sustainable ways of living
Wages are not
increasing as
quickly as cost of
living
Cost of living
This means people have
less disposable income
left after they have paid
their essential expenses
e.g. food, rent/mortgage,
travel
Which means people
cannot save as much
money from their monthly
salary
Credit Crunch and Housing
US banks give large
mortgages to people who
don’t earn enough money
US homeowners can’t
afford to make mortgage
repayments
US banks are getting less
income and have less
available money
Due to the links between
the UK and the US, UK
banks have less money
Banks change mortgage
conditions, no more 100%
mortgages
Homeowners now have to
raise a 10-20% deposit
Less people can afford to
buy a house and house
prices drop
Industrialisation in China
China has industrialised rapidly over the last
30 years. This has had many impacts on
China and the rest of the world.
Effects of industrialisation in
China
Positive
Negative
China
• China is getting wealthier as
are its people
• Quality of life is improving
• Trade surplus (i.e. exporting
more than they import)
• Increasing amounts of air pollution
from fumes
• Working conditions in factories
can be poor
UK
• Manufactured products are
getting cheaper e.g. mobile
phones allowing people to
spend money on other
things
• Chinese people have more
money to go on holiday and
they are visiting the UK in
increasing numbers which
benefits our tourism industry
• Factories are closing in the UK as
companies move to countries with
cheaper labour which leads to
unemployment
• China is increasing the effects of
global warming across the world
• Fuel and energy prices are getting
more expensive
Food miles
Food miles describe how far food has
travelled from where it was grown/produced
to where you bought it from.
 You need to be able to explain how higher
food miles can impact the environment.
Migration and Jobs
There is increasing competition for jobs in the UK. This is due to an
influx of migrants from the EU (e.g. Poland).
 Make sure you can explain the push and pull factors associated
with this migration.
 You also need to be able to explain the positive and negative
impacts on the UK and the country which the migrants have left
(e.g. Poland).

Globalisation
Globalisation refers to increasing global
connectivity, integration and
interdependence in the economic, social,
technological, cultural, political, and
ecological spheres.
 Make sure you can
explain how
globalisation
influences your
life.
Carbon footprints
Your carbon footprint
represents the total
greenhouse gas
emissions that are
caused by you (directly
and indirectly).

Global warming
Global warming describes the recent trend of increasing
temperatures. This is significantly different from past climate change
we have seen. Scientists believe that this global warming has been
caused by humans emitting greater amounts of greenhouse gases
which trap outgoing radiation, and as a result, warm the Earth.

warming

Sustainable living
Sustainable: meeting the needs of today without
harming the chances of future generations to meet
their own needs.
There are many ways in which we can make our lives more
sustainable and attempt to reduce the problems of global
warming. Eco-friendly living is getting more and more
popular and many houses are now designed to enable
sustainable living.
 Make sure you can explain how houses can be designed
to encourage sustainable living.
