Who is behind the vision? We are a group of individuals who all agree that Aeroe needs a solid and long term sustainable vision for its ferry operation. We believe that the timing for introducing new and energy efficient tonnage is now. Solutions better adapted to present transport demand and the need for viable green operation. In addition we do not believe that the existing ferries at Aeroe will be able to accommodate future needs for cheaper, faster or greener transport for citizens, guests and businesses. Finally we believe that a paradigm shift is already possible in ferry operation. A shift away from oil consuming low efficient ships and towards electrical vessels powered by modern batteries and charged by power from wind turbines ashore or at sea. All the ferries to the island of Aeroe will be supplied by only two wind turbines (of 2,3 MW) using only batteries for power on board. This allows for a zero emission solution - No CO2 or NOx An optimized hull with very low weight and water resistance allows for 13-15 knots also in the shallow waters around the island. The electrical driven ferry takes 25 cars with a crew of only three people but have a better transport capacity than the existing bigger ferries due to higher cruising speed. The visionary group: Flemming Boye, Associate Professor in economy Roar Falkenberg, CEO local shipyard Leif Jensen, Harbour master Niels Aage Jensen, Master mariner and instructor Peter Jensen, Hotel owner Jens Kristensen, Consulting Naval Architect Boye Kroman, Shipowner Henrik Hagbarth Mikkelsen, MBA in Shipping and logistics, CBS John Strojek, MBA from CBS Read more at: Page 4 Three conventional diesel driven ferries will be replaced by four smaller ferries driven from batteries charged by wind turbines. www.greenferries.dk The green ferry consumes less than half the energy of the existing ferries but is still able to load 3/4th of the original dead weight. Savings 9 million kilos of CO2 will be saved per year compared to 2012. 54 percent of energy costs are saved compared to 2012 prices. 22 percent is saved from using electrical power instead of diesel. 40 percent is saved on crew wages due to smaller crews. 25 percent is saved on transit time from Marstal and Soeby. www.greenferries.dk Page 1 How to execute the vision? Using a public private partnership for development and funding it is assured that customers and community will gain from the cost savings and private companies from know how obtained. Prospects It is estimated that the energy efficient newbuilidings can be subsidized with 30 to 50 percent from the EU and other public sources like it was the case for the islands solar power plants Fully implemented running costs of more than 3 million € can be saved per year. Savings exceeding the present public funding of the island ferry routes Customers on all routes are faced with more frequent departures and lower transit time and waiting time. Cost savings equals a price reduction on fares of 5 € per passenger roundtrip and 10 € per car ticket. Peak capacity improves 15 percent helping present congestion problems in summer season. The green ferry vision prevent future rise in oil price and emission taxes from impacting the island economy serverely. Synergy with electrical driven busses on an island with only short distances is obvious i.e. sharing charging stations with ferries. Together with existing wind turbines and solar power plants this will place the Island of Aeroe on the frontend of green solutions. Page 2 www.greenferries.dk The public institutions have the obligation to provide with ferry services to all Danish islands and an obligation to meet goals set for the reduction of CO2 emissions in the transport sector. Private and partly private companies are paid for delivered services but are also rewarded from new know how. This will be of commercial use for them elsewhere. Overall plan for implementation A smaller high speed ferry is acquired and refitted for hybrid operation (both batteries and diesel). It is employed from Soeby, sailing time 30 minutes. Here it will improve the frequency and reduce the use of the old and more costly ferry. Three electrical driven ferries substitutes existing ferries in succession. Sailing time respectively 40, 45 and 65 minutes from Marstal, Soeby and Aeroeskoebing. Existing ferries are sold. Eventual losses from sale are paid back from cost savings in less than two years. Fares are reduced significantly due to cost savings. Public busses are changed for electrical driven busses. The island acquires wind turbines equivalent to power used. www.greenferries.dk Page 3
