Let’s start this lesson by exploring
“Spaces for Art”.
• have been around for more than 150 years and were
first developed from a camera obscura.
In our last lesson we learnt that “Cameras…”
• were first used by scientists, artists and
professional photographers. But are now used
by almost anyone as cameras today are much
easier to use.

An artist can show their artwork in an Art Gallery or Museum
Let’s see the kind of places where artists
can show their artwork…
Many people who are interested in art often visit an art gallery or museum. An art gallery or museum is a place
where you can see different types of art in one building. This artwork is by NZ artist Heather Straka where she
had asked 59 different artists to copy her original painting.

Art can be shown in the park or even on top of a building!
People enjoying the fresh air outside or having a picnic in the park will also get to enjoy the oversize
sculptures of Claus Oldenburg.

Art can be shown on billboards or in parks
Billboards are great spaces for photography based
artwork, like this artwork by Auckland Photographer
Penitoa Finau. Everyday people walking to school or
driving to work will get to experience his art.

Places such as a park are great spaces for
painted Murals like this this one in Dawson
Road Otara. Everyone from the community
enjoying the park will also get to enjoy this
painted Mural.
Art can be shown on buildings at night or on the footpath during the day
Buildings at night are great spaces to show video art.
People enjoying the night life of the city will also get a
chance to enjoy video art as big as a building!

Footpaths are another great space to show art.
Artist Julian Beever creates 3D chalk drawings
on footpaths. People get to experience his art
and be part of it such as the person with the
paddle above.
Art can be displayed in a house or on a tee shirt
Inside of a house can be a great place to display art. This
often means the artwork has been bought from the artist.
Art in a house means only your friends and family can see
and enjoy it.

Tee shirts have rapidly become popular
as a space to show art, with most being
printed on. Tee shirts are great spaces
for art because everyone you walk pass
will get to see and experience it.
As we have seen, there are many different
