The Progressive era was between 1890 and 1920. During this time period America tried to fix their problems. Progressives tried to make America a better and safer place to live. America realized the issues of child labor and the poor working conditions. They also starting regulating big business and pass the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act. America tried to make its government more efficient and more responsive. They also gave citizens more say in government by giving them direct election of senators. At the end of the era society realized the importance of the woman's role in society so in 1919 the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote was passed. Why are the children standing on the machines? The children look they are working on something on the top of the machine. Its looks like they are in some sort of factory. They seem like they are focused and are not playing. During this time factories would hire children because the work for a lower pay. I believe the children are standing on the machine because they are working and the job was meant for an adult but because the children are working for less they are have the job. http://www.historyplace.com/unitedstates/c hildlabor/hine-empty.jpg http://xroads.virginia.edu/~ ma01/davis/photography/im ages/riisphotos/riis2.jpg Is this area over populated? The building in the back has a lot of windows and looks runned down. There looks theres very little space in between all the buildings. The middle building looks like its caving in and was poorly built. The right middle building looks like it has no windows and instead they just use a curtain. During this time the immigration rate was high. This caused the city to become over populated. This caused for people to live wherever they could even in harsh conditions.Thats why someone was still living in the caving in building. I am confided that this area is overpopulated because of how close the buildings are and because of the harsh conditions the people live in Why do the people have their head down? It appears they are in a basement because there is no windows or doors so it might be basement. It looks they are drinking. Many progressives believed that alcohol was the reason for a lot of society’s problems. This time period was the being of prohibition. The men have their heads down because they are drunk. I believe that maybe it was looked down upon to drink so they went to some sort of bar in a basement to drink. http://www.masters-ofphotography.com/images/full/riis/riis_basement_p ub.jpg What are they doing? It looks like they are working. There is a lot of scrap by their feet. They are gathered around some kind of table and are working on something. It looks like the young kids are even working. Some children seem to be only four years old. The child closest looks to young to work so many she had to go to work with her mom because there is no one to watch her.During this time when the picture was taken you could work at any age.The age you started to work depended all on the family you came from and the money they had. In conclusion in this photograph it looks like men and women are gathered around a table working with their children. http://www.historyplace.com/unitedsta tes/childlabor/hine-dunbar.jpg http://loc.gov/pictures/resource/cph.3a32338 / What are this woman standing in front of and what are they protesting for ? There is a big fence behind them so whatever they standing in front of important and protected. One sign a women is holding says “ Mr. President how long must women wait for liberty”. Womens Suffrage was a big part of the progressive era. Woman were fighting for their right to vote. I feel confident that the woman are in front of the white house protesting for womens suffrage.
