YEARS 5-9 PERFORMING ARTS
TERM ONE OVERVIEW 2015
Welcome back to all of our students for 2015. The following descriptions provide an overview of the
exciting programs being offered in Performing Arts on Middle Years this term.
Year 5 Music
Students learn the skills of working together
musically in small and large groups and begin to
understand the key concepts of working in a
band and producing music. Students also learn
to appreciate the different genres of music
available to dance to and begin to express their
dance skills in a variety of ways through different
games and dance challenges.
Year 6 Music
Students will be introduced to the elements of
music through interactive rhythm, melody and
harmony activities. Over time, students learn
and perform a selection of pop songs as a class.
Year 6 Dance
Students study various aspects of dance,
drama, movement and choreography. Students
begin to understand how their bodies create
shape in space and how movement can
communicate ideas and narrative within dance.
Students work collaboratively to showcase
elements of stagecraft in both dance and drama
during workshop activities and practical
assessment.
Year 7 Music
Students participate in a variety of activities
designed to expose them to a wide spectrum of
music. Students will be introduced to the
elements of music through interactive rhythm,
melody and harmony activities.
Year 7 Dance
This Term, Year 7 students will be required to
complete a research assignment on a dance
style of their choice. They will also participate in
safe warm up activities and work toward learning
choreography to a song of their choice and
perform the final product at the end of Term 1
assembly
Year 8 Jamming
Students will be introduced to the elements of
music through interactive rhythm, melody and
harmony activities. Students will also study well
known song writers write their own lyrics. The
study of lyrics will lead to the creation of melody,
harmony, song structure and eventually their
own songs. At the completion of this unit,
students will have composed, recorded and
performed their very own songs.
Year 8 Garage Band
Students will participate in a variety of song
writing activities designed to expose them to
various styles of music and music technology.
Students will learn about melody, harmony,
chords and song structure.
Year 8 Hip Hop for Life
Students explore the history and evolution of Hip
Hop from its early stages in the late seventies,
its growth in the eighties and nineties to the
current Hip Hop scene we have today. Students
learn classic rhymes from well-known artists
together with famous beats and breaks, then
work together to play them as a class band.
Year 8 Dance Makers
This Term, Year 8 students will work in small
groups to develop a safe warm up structure and
deliver this to their peers in class time. They will
also work in their group to create appropriate
choreography to teach to Year 2 students. They
will travel to the Early Years campus once a
week, during class time, for 3 sessions where
they will become the teachers and their students
will be the performers.
Year 8 Stage Arts
In term one of Stage Arts the students learn
some basic dramatic concepts and skills that
they will need, to perform entertaining pieces for
an audience. They use skills like stage fighting
techniques, mime, gesture, narrative planning,
play building and script writing to create their
own short scenes. During this process they also
keep a reflective journal to record their creative
inspirations and consolidate understanding.
Year 9 Backstage Pass
Students work in a variety of ways (individually,
small group and ensembles) to prepare a range
of musical pieces for performances within the
class. Students will be responsible for working
on all aspects of performance such as staging,
band equipment, mixing and recording.
Year 9 Beats and Mixers
Students explore the history and evolution of
current technologies present in music. They use
software packages from a variety of media to
create, arrange and record music. Students
then use their knowledge of this software to
write
and
compose
their
very
own
compositions.
Year 9 Hip Hop Dance
This Term year 9 students are working on a
research assignment on the differences and
similarities between Hip Hop and Ballet. They
will also be required to complete an instructional
video or photo board of 1 Hip Hop and 1 Ballet
move of their choice. Students will participate in
practical tasks including a 3 session Break
Dance Incursion.
