Scheibe, PhD Associate Professor of Management Information Systems SCIS Department, College of Business, Iowa State University Office: 3343 Gerdin Business Building Office Phone: 515-294-0545 Office Hours: MW 2:00-3:00 or by appointment Email: kscheibe at iastate.edu URL: www.bus.iastate.edu/kscheibe Course Objectives: Technology continues to drive the way companies do business. With the ubiquity of the Internet came ecommerce and online marketing. Now organizations are working to establish c-commerce (collaborative commerce). The challenge faced by management is to remove traditional barriers within and across companies, whether geographical, departmental, personnel, customer, vendor, distributer or business partner with the goal to seamlessly integrate the entire supply chain. For example, companies like Coca-Cola are employing electronic point-of-sales (EPOS) systems to allow sales tracking in real time. This technology enables them to quickly forecast product demand, shortages, etc. and work closely with their distributers. This class will study the technologies that organizations are using to create c-commerce systems, the challenges the organizations face, solution methodologies, and current practices. Background: What kind of background do I need for this course? This course will cover a variety of IT topics as they relate to the supply chain. You should have already taken the introduction to supply chain class and have a good understanding to SC concepts (i.e. Bullwhip effect). This class will be highly discussion oriented, so it will be essential that you read the associated materials beforehand and come prepared to interact. Policies / Advise: The material in this class continues to build upon itself. Due dates for readings are shown in the schedule. Come to class prepared and on time. If the opportunity presents itself, do not surf the Web, check email, chat, or allow the computer to distract you from the lecture. Begin your homework early in case you need help. When you email me questions, please be courteous and professional in your correspondence. Expectations: I expect your work to be original. I am very serious about academic integrity and have no patience with cheating/sharing work. I expect you to be prepared for class, to have read beforehand and to contribute intelligently. I expect you to be on time. You can expect me to be timely, professional, and fair. Homework: You may NOT work together on homework assignments. There will be a number of homework assignments. Homework submissions will be electronic and must be turned in by 11:59 PM on the day it is due. No late submissions will be accepted. No homework will be dropped in the HW grade average computation. You must use anti-virus software to insure that the work you submit is virus-free. Submitting files that contain a known virus will result in a zero for the assignment. I use McAfee virus (available to students of ISU). Each assignment will be accompanied by further submission instructions which you are expected to follow By taking this course, you agree that your papers and other written assignments may be subject to evaluation for originality and intellectual integrity (i.e. plagiarism) by use of WebCT/Blackboard SafeAssign. All papers submitted for review will be included as source documents in Iowa State University’s Institutional SafeAssign database so that future student work can be compared to it too. Exams: There will be three examinations in this course. I do not give make-up exams; therefore, in the event of a conflict with exam dates, you must notify me well before the exam is given so that we may schedule an alternative time for you to take the exam. I will collect and keep all exams. The last exam is not comprehensive. Attendance and Participation: I do not require attendance, but we will be covering a lot of material in this class, therefore it is essential that you attend and come prepared. You must have done the assigned reading before each class. You are responsible for any material covered in class. If you miss a class, make sure you get any announcements/assignments/materials. I only excuse missed classes for reasons acceptable to the university. This does not include job interviews, family reunions, amazing vacation opportunities, etc. What I mean by excuse, is allowance for make up of exams, quizzes, homework submissions. You cannot participate if you are not present, but presence does not guarantee full participation credit (you cannot just warm a seat and expect credit for participation). Iowa State University’s statement on Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty occurs when a student uses or attempts to use unauthorized information in the taking of an exam; or submits as his or her own work themes, reports, drawings, laboratory notes, or other products prepared by another person; or knowingly assists another student in such acts or plagiarism. Such behavior is abhorrent to the Page 2 of 4 Course Syllabus MIS 440: Supply Chain Information Systems university, and students found responsible for academic dishonesty face expulsion, suspension, conduct probation, or reprimand. Instances of academic dishonesty ultimately affect all students and the entire university community by degrading the value of diplomas when some are obtained dishonestly, and by lowering the grades of students working honestly. See the Conduct Code at www.dso.iastate.edu/ja for more details and a full explanation of the Academic Misconduct policies. Disability Issues: Please address any special needs or special accommodations with me at the beginning of the semester or as soon as you become aware of your needs. Those seeking accommodations based on disabilities should obtain a Student Academic Accommodation Request (SAAR) form from the Disability Resources (DR) office (515-294-7220). DR is located on the main floor of the Student Services Building, Room 1076.
