TRAINING With the start of the new semester just around the corner it's time to kick off our schedule of IT training courses for the 2011/12 academic year. We always wait until the busyness of the start of the academic year has died down and so our courses this year will be starting in w/b 10th October. Our schedule of courses is available at 4 Department of Primary Care and Public Health http://blogs.cf.ac.uk/insrveducation/en/category/IT+training+programme which will also update with availability of places for each course. We are currently working on some new additional courses that we hope to schedule before Christmas as so our current schedule only runs up until early November but will be extended soon up to the end of the year. All courses this year have been updated to the latest version of supported applications which means that our most popular courses, Microsoft applications, are now offered as Office 2007 versions. Refer to our web pages at http://www.cf.ac.uk/insrv/educationandtraining/ittraining/courseprogramme.html for details of course content and prerequisites. This follows a scheduled upgrade to our core switches and routers as part of the maintenance work which took place the previous weekend. As a result of yesterdays problem, we have had to roll back to the previous version of software on switches in order to restore network connectivity. Please note that until further notice, the network will be running **at-risk** whilst this problem is investigated. We are committed to ensuring the network remains as stable as possible during this busy enrolment period. Please rest assured that we will not make further changes to the network unless there is a confirmed and clear danger to network stability which mandates urgent intervention. An agreed and recommended plan of action would then need to be discussed, following consultation with the equipment manufacturer. A senior engineer from the equipment manufacturer has arrived on site and is now working with our Network team to try to ascertain the root cause of the problem, as well as helping to ensure network stability. Further updates will be forthcoming, once I have additional information. For details regarding all ongoing risks and confirmed outages, please see the INSRV Status page at http://www.cf.ac.uk/insrvstatus ------------------------------------------------------------------Cardiff Portal - September update What is being done? For any non-855 imaged workstations that encounter issues with Kaspersky, or if messages are displayed that the licence will expire on 1st October, the recommendation is to remove Kaspersky and install Sophos. Please do so via following path: Start→Networked Applications→General Software→Trial Applications→Deploy Sophos (will need a restart but doesn't automatically reboot the workstation) This will remove the standard version of Kaspersky and install Sophos. Any non-standard installations of Kaspersky (ie if anyone has downloaded Kaspersky from the web for any reason) should be manually removed (using Add/Remove Programs) and the utility run to install Sophos. For those of you who are authorised to remote-manage machines, it might be useful to update any affected workstations should the opportunity arise and of course if time allows. Please note that if any schools should have changed their local administrator password, this will have subsequently prevented the automatic key upgrade by the Kaspersky server. The security team can update the keys automatically but will need you to advise them of the password - if you 7 Department of Primary Care and Public Health wish to do this, please contact the security team (Gary White) directly on ext. 77120 - do not send passwords via the email system. Your insrvAssist contact for this message is Jackie Kirk. -------------------------------------------------------Special Offers for Staff: Peacocks and John Lewis Peacocks Peacocks on Queen Street are once again offering a fantastic offer of 40% off to all staff of Cardiff University.
