Settlers Protest at Anahuac • 1st serious conflict between Texans and Mexico because of the Law of April 6, 1830 Settlers Protest at Anahuac • Juan Davis Bradburn is Commander of the garrison at Anahuac. He was accused of taking imports and incoming slaves. This was against the Law of April 6th, 1830 • Bradburn arrested 2 lawyers who were trying to get the goods back and free the slaves • One lawyer was William B. Travis Settlers Protest at Anahuac • Texans get angry at these arrests and march into the garrison at Anahuac • They demanded the release of the two lawyers and a Skirmish (a small battle)occurs • Bradburn agrees to release prisoners BUT only if the colonists leave Anahuac. So the Settlers retreat to Turtle Bayou • Unfortunately, Bradburn was only lying Turtle Bayou Resolution Provisions of the Turtle Bayou Resolution: 1. Texans pledged loyalty to Mexico 2. Texans were to uphold Mexico’s Constitution of 1824 3. Texans were in support of Santa Anna’s revolt against Mexico’s president, Bustamante Bloodshed at Velasco • While Texans were in conflict at Anahuac with Bradburn, John Austin led a group to Brazoria to get 2 cannons to fight Bradburn. • The Battle of Velasco broke out. • This would be the first bloodshed of the Texas Revolution Bloodshed at Velasco cut and paste in journals Bloodshed at Velasco-CUT & Paste Colonel Ugartechea would not allow the cannons to pass Bitter fighting and men died on both sides Colonel Ugartechea agreed to leave Texas Meanwhile back in Anahuac Protest Solved • Colonel Piedras, arrived from Nacogdoches • Talks with Texans at Turtle Bayou and talks with Bradburn • He removes Bradburn from his position and releases the 2 lawyers • The garrison soldiers declare their loyalty to Santa Anna and leave Texas. Santa Anna defeats Bustamante • 1832 Santa Anna’s troop defeat President Bustamante • Bustamante resigns • Santa Anna become president in 1833 Convention of 1832 Copy Into your Journals San Felipe de Austin 58 delegates S.F. Austin president of convention Wanted Texas to be a separate Mexican state. Immigration from the US to resume. The requests was never sent to the Mexican government. The convention was a failure. Convention • of 1833 • Same requests This convention prepared a constitution for the Mexican state of Texas • Stephen F Austin, Dr. James Miller and Erasmo Seguin were to take the resolution to Santa Anna. • Only S.F. Austin would go to Mexico S.F. Austin in Mexico • Waited from April to October to see Santa Anna • Austin wrote letter to San Antonio describing difficulties and encouraged Texans to form their own government S.F Austin in Mexico City In November – Santa Anna sees Stephen F. Austin and agrees to: • Allow immigration for U.S. • But NOT separate state for Texas Austin leaves for Mexico City and arrives in Saltillo by January. • Once there, Austin was arrested for the letter he wrote Stephen F. Austin back to San Antonio about Arrested freeing Texas from Mexico • Austin was not freed until July 1835! He was gone from Texas in a Mexican jail for 2 years 4 months! • Austin had lost all hope for peace in Texas. Santa Anna changes sides • Santa Anna had problem with the Constitution of 1824 • By 1834 he throws out the constitution and becomes a centralist with complete power (like a dictator). • Texans no longer support Santa Anna The Consultation • Texans meet again at the CONSULTATION of 1835 • Can’t support Santa Anna’s new government • War Party v. Peace Party formed • War Party wanted Independence for Texas • Peace Party wanted to stay with Mexico under Constitution of 1824 • The Consultation voted with Peace Party to force Mexico to live under the Constitution of 1824, but Santa Ana will refuse…
