1) “Latin I and SAT Critical Reading” by Magister (Mr.) Ciprani Course Description: Latin 1 and SAT Critical Reading is designed as a unique approach to help students improve on their SAT reading scores, since research has shown that students of Latin score significantly higher on the SAT compared to their peers. Each day of class will consist of two parts: Part 1 of the course focuses on learning the Latin language as a tool to improve a student’s English vocabulary and grow their understanding of English grammar. Part 2 offers students practice with SAT sentence completion and passage based completion. This course uses Ecce Romani, Book 1, as well as handouts from the teacher. In addition, this class has a secondary focus on time spent discussing the history, myths and culture of the Roman civilization. Students from 5th through 12th grades are encouraged to enroll in this course. Students will encounter a variety of texts in class, ranging from fiction to non-fiction, and Greek Mythology to Modern short stories. By studying selected passages from literature, the student will grow in their ability to write florid and imaginative prose and poetry of their own. Students from 5th through 12th grades are encouraged to enroll in this course. Younger students are also welcome to enroll. Course Description: The writing classes will include the use of a wide array of writing strategies and assignments that cover a variety of writing modes: narrative, descriptive, explanatory, cause and effect, compare and contrast, and argumentative. We will also incorporate some basic literary analysis, using elements of literature and texts on each individual’s reading level. Students will be prepared for both the multiple choice section of the test and the written “essay” response. The class takes a two-part approach to preparing students for the exam, encompassing both traditional test preparation- the tips and tricks commonly taught to SAT students- and a rigorous study of writing skills that will serve students beyond the SAT exam.
