June 10, 2013 Dear Potential A.P. Biology Students, Welcome and congratulations on enrolling in A.P. Biology! Advanced Placement Biology is a rigorous high school level course that is equivalent to an introductory college biology course for science majors. In order to cover the required material for the biology course, it is essential that you complete some reading over the summer that reinforces concepts learned during prerequisite chemistry and biology courses. The textbook that you will need is Biology, Seventh Edition by Campbell and Reece. You will also need the supplementary guide: Preparing for the AP Biology Exam. Please see Mrs. Ray in the library to sign out these resources. Six chapters from this text have been selected as your summer assignment. These six chapters are outlined below. The textbook comes with a CD-ROM of student resources. There is also an online version of the textbook with various resources (reading outlines, animations, summaries, etc.). The information for creating an online account is on the next page. You should use these resources to assist you in your studies. I would suggest the following sequence: read and outline the chapter review the chapter notes available through the CD-ROM and online read the chapter again review the summary section at the end of the chapter review the questions at the end of the chapter complete the online activities/animations/videos online take the chapter assessments available on the CD-ROM or online The following chapters are required summer reading: Chapter 1 2 3 4 5 8 Topic Exploring Life The Chemical Context of Life Water and the Fitness of the Environment Carbon and the Molecular Diversity of Life The Structure and Function of Macromolecules An Introduction to Metabolism Page Numbers 2-29 32-46 47-57 58-67 68-91 141-159 There will be a closed book test on the material covered over the summer when you come back in September on the second day of class. This test will have many of the same questions as the chapter quizzes and test your knowledge and comprehension of the topics presented in the summer reading. You will also be turning in your outlines of the six chapters when you take the Summer Reading Test. IMPORTANT!!! Before July 15, please email me at dangelozzi@mail.bts.k12.nj.us to let me know that you received the summer reading assignment. I will be in contact with you during the summer to check on your progress via email. If you have any questions, please contact me through email. Good luck!
