Needle Stick/Blood Borne Pathogen Exposure: ABCS

1. Report the exposure to your attending /clinical instructor/supervisor to document the incident.

2. Clean the affected area of any blood , fluid, etc.

If you are splashed in the eye, rinse your eye out with water. If you are stuck with a sharp, clean the site with soap and water.

• Clean area & obtain first aid if needed for exposed area. For eye splashes, flush eyes immediately with at least 500 cc sterile saline.

Substance Abuse Policy

• Can be tested because site requires it, suspicion, or at student’s request (e.g. away elective)

Screen typically test for the following: Amphetamines, Barbiturates,

Benzodiazapines, Cocaine, Opiates (including various synthetic opiates), Phencyclidines & Marijuana

• Dr. Robert Gwyther is our new Medical Review Officer (MRO)

• If you need to be tested because the site requires it, please let Dr.

Gwyther know about legitimate medications , he will not let the Dean’s

• May face disciplinary action for refusing screen
