SYNOPSIS
Kerry Dingleberry is a normal teenager who lives with her mum. At the beginning of the play Kerry is getting
ready for school. But Kerry's mum, Mrs D, seems to be more interested in her magazine than helping Kerry
to get to school on time. But then Mrs D is, well, a little bit crazy. She loves pop music, fashion and singing
loudly. She hates doing the housework, cooking and being too serious. Kerry thinks her mum is very
embarrassing. She can't even escape her at school because her mum is also her English teacher.
Kerry hates having to go to English classes, because her mum is so silly as a teacher. In fact the only thing
she likes about school is …Paul, the most popular boy in the class.
Kerry wishes everything was different, she wishes her mum was more serious and that Paul was her
boyfriend. Mrs Dingleberry wishes Kerry was more adventurous and exciting and that she would talk to
Paul. When Mrs Dingleberry invites Paul to their house for tea, Kerry is terrified her mum will embarrass her in
front of Paul. Will their dreams come true, and if they do, is it what they really want? Watch and find out!

WORKSHEET 1
Ask the students to look at the photographs and, in pairs, write down their
first impressions of the people; their age, occupation, character. Just give
them 2-3 minutes to do this. Then refer them to the list of facts about the
characters and ask the students to guess who they think each one refers
to.

Without checking the answers, ask the students to read the text and, in

Ask the students to look at the quotes and decide which character they
think said them.

Ask the students; Is Kerry’s mum serious? No. Does Kerry like her Mum being
her teacher? No. Is Paul Kerry’s boyfriend? No. Then write the following
sentences on the board: I wish my mum was more serious. I wish my mum
wasn’t my English teacher. I wish Paul was my boyfriend.
State that we use “to wish” for things we want to come true in the future
which haven’t come true yet.
Ask the students which other word in the sentence is a verb; (was/wasn’t).
Tell them that because this sentence is conditional, this verb is in the past
simple.
Ask the students to choose one sentence for each character and transfer
the information from the first to the third person. If the students have never
studied the conditional before, they can continue using the verb to be to
write sentences about themselves. If they have studied it before they can
use other verbs. E.g. I wish I had a new bike, I wish I could speak more
languages.

APPENDIX - TRACK 20- PAUL’S SONG
Paul and his class have to write a song for their English homework. APPENDIX
1 (LOWER LEVEL). Gap fill -write the following words on the board: see, you,
sit, we, know, near, talk, true. Get the students to fill in the gaps as they listen.
They could have a go at writing a song/rap or poem in English!
APPENDIX 2 (HIGHER LEVEL). Give pairs or small groups the words. They need
to put them in the correct order as they listen to the song.

WORKSHEET 6- DRAMA ACTIVITY
Ask the students how each character feels; Kerry - embarrassed and
nervous, Paul - nervous and shy, Mrs D - excited and enthusiastic
Ask the students how the characters would talk, walk and sit if they
felt like this. You could play a quick game where the students walk
around the room, constantly moving and filling the space. You shout
out different feelings happy, depressed, nervous, tired, energetic,
sad, bored, confused, angry, surprised etc and the students have to
change how they are walking to suit the feeling. If you are short of
space they can play this by sitting down and changing their position.
In groups of three the students can act out the scene. Start with Paul
out of the scene and note that Mrs D comes in and out of the scene
several times.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR SHOWS FOR BIG GROUPS
A clear space of 3m x 4m. If there is a stage, the stage must be no more than 1m high. The space must
be empty of furniture/children when the actors arrive.
A small table.
4 x chairs (adult sized)
2 x plug sockets in the performance space for the sound and light equipment.
General lighting.
The actors need 1 hour to set up the lights, music and sound, and 45 minutes to set down.
GUIDELINES FOR A SUCCESSFUL SHOW
In order for the children to enjoy and follow the play performed in another language, we recommend the
following guidelines:
 Ensure that the students have done at least some preparation from the Workpack, so that they know
who the characters are and are familiar with the story.
To avoid distraction, limit the number of times teachers or students need to enter/leave the room during
the performance.
The students will be asked to be quiet and listen in some moments and asked to participate in others.
Please ask all teachers/monitors/parents present during the session to encourage the students to be a
good audience and respect the actors.
Turn off all mobile phones.
No eating or drinking.
