• UIL is the University Interscholastic League
• The Journalism UIL sponsors five contests:
– Editorial writing
– Feature writing
– Headline writing
– News writing
– Copy editing (new this year in pilot mode)

Editorial writing
• Editorial writing is an article that states the
publication’s stance on a particular issue
• A persuasive essay that offers a solution to a
problem

Feature writing
• Feature writing tells the reader a story with a
beginning, middle and end
• It uses quotes liberally and allows the reader
to see the story through detailed description
and vivid writing

that will impact them in some way, flowing
from most important to least important

accuracy of text
