Thank you for volunteering on the subcommittee tasks. Membership report by Ben Smarslok: Academic Industry Government/Org. TC Full Members (excluding Int) International (Full) Affiliate/Friend Associate Members Alumni TC Total (Full, Int., Assoc., Alumni) Overall Total Count 27 12 16 34 5 9 6 1 46 55 Percentage 49% 22% 29% max = 35 max = 50 Other membership related updates - Christos Chamis and Curtis Larsen moved to Alumnus status and Jay Martin moved to Affiliate status. - Sondipon Adhikari recently became an AIAA Associate Fellow AIAA NDA TC Activity Rating - Rating system is used to ensure activity of our members and reinforce reasons for promotion of Associate Members and Affiliates to Full Members. The evaluation period is the past two years, including 2 SciTech conferences. Activity of TC Members is expected in the following form. The weighted points indicate the level of impact on the TC: 1.5pts – NDA TC Office position 1.0pt – Subcommittee member 0.5pts – Liaison 2pts – NDA Conference Chair position 1pt – Special Session organizer 1pt – Student paper judge 0.5pts – Abstract or paper reviewer, session chair, and attendance 2013 AIAA NDA TC Membership Application Deadline - This year’s TC Membership application deadline is Nov. 1, 2013. Any prospective Associate or Full Member can use the online nomination form found on the AIAA website at: https://www.aiaa.org/TechCommitteeNomination.aspx - - New members and Affiliates/Friends must apply online. However, regarding the limited Full member slots, we should move some deserving Associate members to Full. But, new Associate members are encouraged to apply online. Associate members DO NOT need to apply again through AIAA to become a Full Member. If you wish to become a Full Member, contact me or someone on the Membership Subcommittee. The Membership Subcommittee also continually evaluates Associate member candidates and nominates those who are particularly active in the TC and/or are now over 35 years of age. Rosters are officially updated at the end of January. Full, current roster is included at the end of the minutes. TC Activity Rating: Due to an increased number of TC applicants and some confusion at AIAA regarding membership status, we are currently at the maximum number of TC members with 35 of 35 slots full. Therefore, to rotate in new, active members, we are going to be relying on the TC activity report card. The metrics for the report card include meeting attendance, sessions chaired, papers reviewed, and office positions. The more inactive members are going to be requested to move to Affiliate status. Please contact Ben Smarslok or Shyama Kumari if you have any concerns or questions. Upcoming NDA Conference Chair and Tech Chairs: Chair/Tech Chair: 2014 Thacker/Tuegel 2015 Tuegel/Rumpfkeil 2016 Rumpfkeil /??? 2014 NDA conference statistics summarized by Eric Tuegel: Abstracts received: 48 (48 in 2013) Abstracts accepted: 44 (47 in 2013) TBD papers withdrawn (6 in 2013) TBD papers presented (48 in 2013) 9 sessions (10 in 2013) 9 NDA student papers (16 in 2013) 9 sessions, one in each time slot. There is no concurrent session. 3 special sessions for the model validation, uncertainty quantification, and nondeterministic method for diagnostics & prognostics are on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, respectively. Keynote: Dr. Ravi Chona (AFRL) is scheduled as the keynote speaker; Ben Thacker is also working on plan B. Student papers: 9 student papers are received for the competition. A monetary award will not be available for 2014. Awards subcommittee should decide on a possible solution before the conference, possibly providing a plaque and certificate. Award subcommittee should decide on the award ceremony will be part of SDM or a separate ceremony. NDA conference challenges: Abstracts are down, but membership is growing, and more new members are encouraged. We need to increase participation. One way to increase submissions is increasing the number of special sessions. Please submit ideas. Next Year: New Event Model goes into effect and SDM is combined with ASM at SciTech 2014, 13-17 January 2014 at National Harbor, MD. Ben Thacker (General Chair) and Eric Tuegel (Technical Chair) Deadlines: Abstracts due 6/5/2013, Papers due 12/12/2013 NASA has a UQ challenge problem and there will be an NDA Special Session for that. Transition to SciTech (Barron Bichon/Ben Thacker) For organizers, there is more TC now to manage. “Verification and Validation Best Practices for Integrated Computational Materials Engineering” was originally proposed as an NDA short course was later withdrawn due to schedule and material conflict with another TC. Education committee will meet up with Krishnamurthy to decide on a new mini-NDA course (offered for free this year) for the duration of an entire session. New NDA TC officers summarized by Barron Bichon: 2014 NDA Conference Tech Chair – Eric Tuegel 2013-2014 NDA-TC Chairmen – Barron Bichon 2013-2014 NDA-TC Vice Chair – Ben Smarslok Elections: NDA Technical Chair (2016) to be elected. Subcommittee Updates: Conference: It was suggested that a SC member become a Student Paper Chair and interact with the Awards SC. Spring 2013 Awards: Ben Thacker raised remaining $5,140 (contributed by SWRI) to get the final $10,000 amount to create a perpetual one student paper award in NDA. We could raise another $10,000 to secure another NDA award on student paper/presentation. The award will begin from 2015; it will not be available for 2014. Awards subcommittee should decide on a possible solution before next year’s conference. Award subcommittee should decide on the award ceremony will be part of SDM or a separate ceremony. Publications: NDA-TC year in review Aerospace America article has been received by Greg Wilson. Shyama Kumari will be sending out reminders regarding submissions for the next year Aerospace America article starting spring 2014. Subcommittee member list: Steering: TC Chair (Bichon), Thacker, Rais-Rohani, Singh, Rumpfkeil Membership: TC Chair (Bichon), TC Vice Chair (?), TC Secretary (Smarslok), Pepin, Iaccarino, Romero Awards: Adhikari, Rumpfkeil, Toropov, Lurati, Torng Publication: Kumari, Tuegel, Wang, Romero, Rais-Rohani Education: Venkataraman, Shin, Krishnamurthy, Singh, Liu Conference: General Chair (Thacker), Technical Chair (Tuegel), Zhao, Graves As a reminder, here are the roles of the Subcommittees: Subcommittees are formed by the NDATC Chairperson to support the specific objectives of the TC and perform the tasks required to support these objectives. Members of the TC are assigned to work on the subcommittees in accordance with their individual areas of knowledge and/or expertise. Steering The primary function of the steering committee is to participate in the planning and oversight of the NDATC. The committee shall appoint members to all the standing committees of the NDATC and supervise the activities of all standing and ad hoc committees. Conference This subcommittee supports all conference related activities of the TC including: (1) preparing of all conference approval documentation and coordination through TAC, (2) overall management and technical program content of TC-sponsored conferences/workshops, (3) coordinating with other TC’s and conferences and workshops, and (4) sponsoring sessions/papers in the TC’s technical area at AIAA and other society conferences. Awards and Promotions AIAA has many awards throughout the year and TC support is usually requested in selecting the recipients. In addition, individual TC’s may have awards of their own during the year. This subcommittee handles all award activities and may also be assigned the responsibility for promoting member upgrade nominations for Associate Fellow and Fellow. AIAA strongly recommends that each TC submit two or more nominations for national awards that are aligned with the interests of their TC. Publications Each year Aerospace America publishes a highlights issue where each TC provides an article describing the major accomplishments for the year in its technical area of expertise. Members of the TC normally participate in writing sections of this article and one member of this subcommittee is assigned the responsibility for combining all of the inputs into an article of approximately 600 words in length. The highlights article typically covers significant accomplishments on both a national and international level of interest to the general aerospace community. Copies of previous year’s contributions are posted on the NDATC website https://info.aiaa.org/tac/adsg/NDATC/default.aspx In addition, this subcommittee promotes preparation of position papers, technical articles for the AIAA journals, is responsible for developing and maintaining the TC’s Guidebook, and annually publishes and distributes a TC membership directory. The NDATC Publications Subcommittee maintains the NDATC Procedures Manual and Membership Directory. Under direction of the NDATC Chairperson, the NDATC Procedures Manual is reviewed and updated annually and thereafter distributed to the NDATC membership at the annual AIAA SDM Conference. Prior to the annual spring NDATC meeting, the NDATC Chairperson sends the NDATC Procedures Manual to each new incoming member. All information presented in this Procedures Manual is for the exclusive use of the NDATC. Use of this information outside the NDATC is authorized at the discretion of the NDATC Chairperson. Education This subcommittee seeks and supports educational activities such as short courses and colloquia related to the TC’s area of expertise. This subcommittee aggressively supports furthering education at colleges and universities through its liaison with the academic community and its support of AIAA student membership. Membership This subcommittee is responsible to review all the new and renewal of NDATC membership applications. Fellowships – April 15th was deadline for fellow nominations and June 15th is deadline for fellows. Too late this year, but January conference timeframe might make it easier to nominate fellows given AIAA’s timeline. NDA course –Due to the new SciTech format, it’s a good opportunity to expose it to a new audience. Suggestion to offer a new course that has a greater focus on UQ, rather than our current reliability-focused course. Instructors and course material will need to be developed. Any new course needs to be approved through the official AIAA process. Liaison reports: To be added for final minutes. AIAA Structures TC: Harry Hilton, Gossamer is renamed as space structures. AIAA MDO TC: Mike Eldred, no report AIAA Design TC: No report. AIAA Fluids TC: Vicente Romero. UQ section added ASCE: Michael Enright, Conference is becoming more and more applied, particular emphasis on civil structures, not much on methods development, 500-600 in attendance, loosing non-deterministic context. ASME: ASME turbo expo, 2 paper session, another panel session and tutorial session, 50-60 people each session. SAE: Smaller than 2-3 years ago, 8-10 session on reliability, UQ, sparse data, Weibull distribution and extreme events. 40-50 people each session. Next several SciTech conferences through Gaylord hotels (affiliated with Marriott): 2015 – Orlando, FL 2016 – San Diego, CA 2017 – Grapevine, TX 2018 – Orlando, FL Next meeting: Spring 2014, Gaylord national, national harbor, Maryland, Date and Time TBD.
