Included within this course are signed numbers, positive and negative exponents, order of operations, conversions in fractions, decimals and percents, algebraic expressions, factoring, polynomials, slope, graphing, linear equations and inequalities and applications. Equivalent to one year of high school algebra. Next Course in Sequence : Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be prepared for MTH 0123 Intermediate Algebra. Transferability: Please visit with the TCC Counseling Center or the Counseling Center at the college or university to which you plan to transfer to determine transferability status of this course. Textbook and Required Materials: Algebra Foundations, by Elayn Martin-Gay, Pearson/Prentice Hall, TCC Custom Edition You will need to bring pencil and paper to every class. You will also need a computer with internet access. If you do not have one at home, you have access to the computer lab at any TCC campus. 1 The MyMathLab (My Lab and Mastering) program student Access Code will be needed to complete online homework assignments. The same textbook and homework access code can be used through Intermediate Algebra at TCC SE Campus. MAKE SURE YOU GET A BLUE or GREEN ACCESS KIT (not red)!! A TI-83+ or TI-84(+) graphing calculator is highly recommended. Graphing calculators can be borrowed for the day from the Math Lab. I will model a TI-84+ as appropriate in class. Cell Phones or computers may not be used as a Calculator during tests! Calculators may not be shared during tests. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students with proper prerequisites should be able to understand and apply the following concepts: 1. Perform the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with signed numbers. 2. Apply properties of real numbers and the order of operations. 3. Understand and use appropriate mathematical terminology. 4. Perform algebraic operations with real numbers. 5. Solve linear equations and quadratic equations (by factoring). 6. Solve application problems by using equations and inequalities in one variable. 7. Graph linear equations. 8. Add, subtract, multiply and divide polynomials. 9. Factor polynomials. Blackboard: When you enrolled for this course you were automatically enrolled in our Blackboard course site. To access Blackboard you can select Blackboard from the top of TCC’s website or use https://bb.tulsacc.edu. You log into the site using your campus wide ID (CWID) and password. If you have any questions, call the help desk at 595-2000. Course documents, announcements, and test scores will be posted on the Blackboard web site for your access. Communications may also be made using the college e-mail system, so you should check these sources of information on a regular basis. At the end of the semester your course grade will be posted on our Blackboard site and TED. 2 Attendance Policy: Attendance is extremely important and frequent absences will affect your performance. Attendance will be counted each class period. For every class you are present you will earn 4 points. We will take attendance on 25 days (the days we do not take tests). There is one extra day built in, so there is a possibility of earning an extra 4 points. Internet classes are available for students who do not want to attend a classroom environment. I will deduct points for missing part of class. Students who are absent from class are responsible for obtaining information and handouts given in the missed class session. Grading and Evaluation: Tests, homework and attendance will be taken for grades. Homework on MyMathLab (online) 200 points 25% Attendance / Participation (25 days @ 4 points) 100 points 12.5% Tests (3 @ 100 points each) 300 points 37.5% Final Test 200 points 25% Total 800 points 100% The regular 10% grading scale will be used. Homework Assignments: Homework will done using an Internet based program called MyLab. www.pearsonmylab.com. It is a supplement to your textbook that provides some wonderful resources. Not only will you find your homework assignments here, but you will have an e-book, videos, tutorials and other resources. You need an access code. Lab hours: Mon-Thur 8am-9pm; Fri 8am4pm; Sat 9am-12pm. I will post my hours on Blackboard. Test Policy: Tests can be made up with instructor permission and must be completed as soon as possible. Your final exam can replace the grade of a previous test score if that will improve your grade. Testing center hours: Mon-Thurs 9am-7pm. In Class Activities: During class you will receive worksheets or assignments to complete with the help of fellow classmates. This is important for your success and the success of your classmates to learn Beginning Algebra. You may be asked to present your results on the whiteboard or turn in your work at the end of class. 3 Final Exam: The comprehensive final exam will be taken on campus during class on the date listed in the course calendar. Use your previous tests to review and prepare for the exam. No books or notes may be used on the final exam. Classroom Etiquette: Open and mutually respectful communication of varied opinions, beliefs, and perspectives during classroom or online discussion encourages the free exchange of ideas that is essential to higher learning and to the ability to learn from each other. Use of any electronic device is at the discretion of the instructor. Please be courteous of others in your class. Cell phones should only be used during class for emergencies. Please go to the hall if you must take a call. Remember talking and disruptive behavior not only takes away from your learning, but from others around you. No food or drink allowed in classrooms (except bottled water). Tulsa Community College rules clearly state that unenrolled children are NOT ALLOWED in classroom. Course Withdrawal: The deadline to withdraw from a course shall not exceed 3/4 the duration of any class. Check the TCC Academic Calendar for deadline that applies to the course(s). Begin the process with a discussion with the faculty member assigned to the course. Contact the Advisement Office at any TCC campus to initiate withdrawal from a course ('W' grade) or to change from Credit to Audit. Withdrawal and/or change to an audit from a course after the drop/add period can alter the financial aid award for the current and future semesters. Students may receive an outstanding bill from TCC if the recalculation leaves a balance due to TCC. Students who stop participating in the course and fail to withdraw may receive a course grade of “F,” which may have financial aid consequences for the student. (Non-attendance does not qualify as a withdrawal. Please follow proper school procedures for withdrawal.) Administrative Withdrawal for Non-Participation: If a student does not attend a course or participate in a course by the end of the refund period the student will be issued a FINAL GRADE of AW for the course, and will be responsible for tuition and fees. To receive a refund, the student must officially withdraw by the end of the refund period. The refund period for a 16 week course is the end of the second week of classes. TCC Alerts is a mass notification system used by the College to notify students and employees of critical incidents or weather related emergencies. You can register for TCC Alerts in your MyTCC Account. Look for the “TCC Alerts” tab. Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty (cheating) is defined as the deception of others about one’s own work or about the work of another. Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the Tulsa Community College system. Tulsa Community College adopts a policy delegating certain forms of authority for disciplinary action to the faculty. Such disciplinary actions delegated to the faculty include, but are not limited to, the dismissal of disrespectful or disorderly students from classes. In the case of academic dishonesty a faculty member may: require the student to redo an assignment or test, or require the student to complete a substitute assignment or test; Record a "zero" for the assignment or test in question; Recommend to the student that the student withdraw from the class, or administratively withdraw the student from the class; Record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the semester. Faculty may request that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the administrative level by submitting such request to the Dean of Student Services. Tobacco Free College Tulsa Community College is a Tobacco Free college in accordance with the Governor’s Executive Order 2012-01 and Title 63 of the Oklahoma Statutes, Section 1-1523 which prohibits smoking or the use of any tobacco products in all public places, in any indoor workplace, and all vehicles owned by the State of Oklahoma and all of its agencies and instrumentalities.
