What is a Network?

A network is a group of computers
connected to each other

A network allows two or more computers
to communicate with each other

Communication could be in the same
building or across a larger distance

Networks allow the sharing of data and
resources between computers.
The Internet

The Internet is a type of network, this
network consists of millions of computers

The Internet is a global network of
computers, this means it is spread all over
the world

Computers all over the world communicate
with each other in order to share data such
as files, websites and e-mails
Web Browser

The web browser is the application used
to access different pages and files on the
Internet
Some examples are;

2. Mozilla Firefox
3. Google Chrome)

What are the Requirements of the
Internet?

A computer –a PC or a Laptop,
nowadays even mobile phones are
capable of accessing the Internet.
A modem - this allows the computer to
send and receive data.
A telephone line (or cable connection) –
this allows the data to be transmitted
from one place to another.
An ISP (Internet Service Provider)
account – this is the Internet service

When all the requires are in place, we can use
our web browser

From the web browser we can now access
different websites using their specific address
How it works
1. The address is typed by the user
2. The address is sent to the ISP
3. The ISP finds the computer (server) which is
storing the website
4. The required website is transferred from the
server to the ISP and then to your computer

WWW

WWW stands for World Wide Web

The WWW is the world of ALL the
different web pages made available from
the Internet

In order to access the WWW (World
Wide Web) a web browser is required
Search Engines

The Internet is very large and contains a lot
of different web pages

Each web page has an address, it is
impossible for us to remember all these
addresses

Search engines are used when we forget a
web address

A keyword is typed into the search engine
and a number of related web pages will be
listed

Hyperlink

A hyperlink is a clickable link found in a
webpage

When a hyperlink is pressed you will be
directed to another page

Most hyperlinks are written in blue and
underline unless it is a button or tab
URL

URL stands for Universal Resource
Locator

The URL is the address of the web page
Examples of some URLs are;

2. http://www.sacredheartmalta.org
3. http://www.facebook.com




Protocol; this shows how files are to be
transferred across the Internet
WWW stands for World Wide Web
Google.com is the domain name

There are many variations domains

Also, countries can add their extension to
the domain, for instance a Maltese .com
website would be .com.mt.

As we said before we use the Internet to

of communication

The Internets offers very good means of
communication in different ways

in real-time using text messages or

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) –
allows the user to make a phone call using

phone calls

Now a days one of the advantages of the
Internet is the sharing of information

A lot of content of the Internet is
available to the public because it is shared
by other computers
