Purpose…of this Campus Master Plan Update is to:

decision making
support the academic mission
set a logical course for capital
improvements over the next thirty to
fifty years
The campus master plan was
prepared in 2000. The 2006 master
plan updated provides a 5-year
incremental update to the 2000 plan.
SMSU is 1 of 52 campuses in the
Minnesota State College and University system.

Created by Minnesota legislature 1963 as
Southwest Minnesota State College
Enrolled its charter class late in the fall of 1967 with
buildings still under construction
The University changed from the quarter to the
semester system in 1996
In January of 2002, a fire destroyed the residence hall
dining facility. The smoke damage from the fire
extended to the Student Center
The university made a change to its current name in
2003 to Southwest Minnesota State University
Ranked top of its division since 1998 by U.S. News
and World Report’s annual America’s Best Colleges
issue—Nine consecutive years
